Well just an update here on the Blue Dogs and Weber Beam Blockers. I finally played in a place that I've played dozens of times before, so it was a pretty good test of what to expect. The Blue Dogs aren't fully broken in quite yet I don't think, but I played the Mazerati most of the night, so they are getting there. I find that I like a slight treble boost from my compressor to get the Mazerati's tone just right. The guys in the band thought it sounded fantastic, which is a good thing. I found the Mazerati to be pretty versatile - for my covers band I think I'm going to leave the Flexi home next time because I can do it all with the Mazerati with a few pedals. That's a good thing - setting up a two amp system in a setting where everything is mic'd up adds a lot of complexity to my gear. We are channel limited on our monitor board (sixteen used to seem like such a BIG number) so I had to set up my little Mackie 1202 and provide a submix to the system. Going to just the Mazerati would help a lot there. The Mazerati is very friendly to the cover band's set lists, and I found that I only switched to the Flexi for about six guitar solos - the rest of the time I was sitting in Mazerati land. I also did some "testing" of the beam blockers. I have always noticed that with a standard cab, as soon as I walk out from in front of the cab. I lose about everything. With the Beam Blockers installed that is no longer the case. Standing right in front of the bass player's amp, I could still hear the Mazerati just fine. Dang I love those beam blockers. I also noticed that I didn't get ear fatigue all night - and we play pretty loud. The Mazerati was sitting on top of my THD 2x12 cab (also beam blocker equipped) so it was right up high and tight. I had the Airbrake set to thru after about six songs, so the Mazerati was close to wide open. I know it was wide open when I stepped on my boost switch, but it wasn't hurting my ears at all, even though I'm quite sure it was cutting through and being heard by everyone. COOL! That's the best of all worlds. Conclusion: It's a keeper. The whole deal. I do plan to do some tailoring on my pedal board - I have a different compressor on the way, and I want to play with this huge pile of stomp boxes I have in the studio. If I go out with just the Mazerati, I'm going to need a couple of nice distortions. I have a lot to choose from here in the basement; three Tonebone pedals, TS-9, Bixonic Expandora, Time Machine Boost, Speedster Turbo-Charger, and some others I've forgotten about. If none of those seem to do the trick, I'll probably explore the Xotic line of pedals - everyone here seems to like them a lot. Success! Ain't it sweet?
