I've only had this thing a week. I originally put off getting one because I just didn't want much over 25-30 watts in an amp. Its really no where 2x the volume of a maz 18 (which I have), but it sure delivers that Maz tone in spades. The master volume works great, and the amp just has a core to it that is magical. I played it today with a Collings P-90 guitar and used and Z Best cab with Scumbac speakers, and it was just a great experience. I really like my Maz 18 NR, but I must admit I am drawn to the richness of this amp. Any of you thinking about getting one of these, I could easily recommend it.

Hey kledbet I am thinking of replacing my Route 66 with a Maz Sr Nr. Route 66 is a great amp, but I miss the chime when playing clean. Can't have both, so if I get the Maz, Route's gotta go. I also have a Z28 that represents the Route 66 tone stack pretty well. You have both Route 66 and Maz Sr Nr. What do you think?

How would you compare the MAZ 38 to your Z28?

38 vs 66 question. The 38 is more versatile mostly due to the master volume. The 38 does have more chime for sure. The 66 has more girth in the middle, which depending on what you are looking for can determine if you want it or the 38. In regards to the Z28 which I also own, it has less bass, faster breakup, and overall less volume. I like it, but these days for some reason my ears lean to the 38 or the 66. The difference in tone between Kt66 tubes and El84 tubes in the Maz is very noticeable. The Route is just plain thicker, and the Maz with its El34's has more chime, and when overdriven has a focused overdrive. The Z28 does that 6V6 sweetness really well, so that is always an option if you want less overall volume.

I have both as well I find the 28 to be pretty much addictive. Not that the 38 does not have its own special thing but the 28 is just magic with a strat. I have a redfang in mine as well as a NOS mullard rect. tube. Tried a NOS ef86 but liked the original better. Tons of bass, not too midrangy and tons of sparkle and chime on the high end. I like the fang very much in this set up, I also use a Avatar BB cab with a V30-G12H and the 1-12 combo with the fang on top for 3-12's....killer sounds...and bottom end that you can walk on. Plenty loud enough for most gigs..espically if using the avatar cab.. I like the 38 better with my Les Paul, not that is sounds badly with my strat just sounds better to me with a LP...it is like instant classic tones that when you think of LP you hear that sound in your head, its right there with the 38. I did use it last week with my strat and it sounded fine, but I have to hand the strat tones to the 28 it just makes strats sound, well like I believe strats were supposed to sound. 28 sounds good with a tele as well, but not as good as the strat IMHO. As I have stated if I could only have one, it would be the MAZ due to its versatility, headroom, Master volume and cut control. I can do so many things, and let me clarify, I say the 28 sounds better with my strat. The MAZ sounds better than 99% of the amps I either own or have played with my strat. The problem lies in the fact that the bar is set so high that I tend to forget what other amps sound like. When I go back to something else then I can really see just how unique and "in the pocket" the Z's are. I can get my 28 to chime like a Vox, sweeeeet like a 6L6 fender, snarl like a monster tweed, and overdrive like a JTM45...as well as many other nuances that I am still finding.. You cant go wrong with either so get what you think you would like becuase no matter what you get you will be wondering what the one you did not sounds like.... then the insanity sets in, its annother and looking for annother..... good luck!

I think what fishman says just proves the point that different players find uses for these amps, and the amps don't fall into just one camp. I have heard players say the z28 is a strat and and others will swear it is a humbucker amp. I have heard the same about the 66, CG and Maz amps. It is always better to try an amp yourself and draw your own conclusions. Good luck on finding the right match for you.

Yeah, we're pretty spoiled with all these great amps to choose from. I am in tone heaven already with mu Route 66 and Z 28. Sometimes I wonder why I am even looking to make any changes...

the major error here is I think that as we play the same amp, find a sound we can live with, go thru all the hoops and such to get there... then we play, and we are happy....then we play more ..we are still happy....then we play more, and now we are hearing or not hearing things that we somehow missed before? Something missing? I think whats missing is the "honeymoon" same as with a sweetie....things are top notch..then ...well you know the rest....lol.... point I am getting at is that we become "used" to the sound we were crazy about and then we hear it when we play but our listening has become jaded.... the amp still sounds as killer as ever its just that we are numbed to it after using and hearing it all the time. I make it a point now to play "lower" quality amps, solid state etc...just to keep it green...I can;t forget from where I have come...other wise I will stray from where I am.... When I get any new amp I record it....if I think the amp is:"drifting" or whatever I play the recording of the amp at is "best"....more often than not, the sound is the same...when its not it is usually time for a retube....its a good tool to have around and it will keep you honest as well...since most of us can;t really recall how amps sounded when new when its 1-2-3 years down the road. I think all amps should come with a recording made at the factory as a "baseline" to work from. If you buy a rifle these days the good ones come with a test target, info on the trigger , whatever to make the item more user friendly and give a baseline of what works best for most to work from. Amps could have the same thing...just a baseline recording of what most people would consider "good" tone...an audio baseline.......just might have something there...sound clips are ok but a quality cd recording of just 5mins could give you clean, dirty, and OD settings to work from and an idea of what sounds are available.... But back to the original topic.... the absolute truth is I don;t need annother amp...... annother absolute truth is I will buy annother amp whether I need it or not... Because I LOVE THEM.....more than guitars, I just really love amps...its a sickness..... And one other thing...good amps make me play better ...that is also an absolute truth... I have had 3 Z's, the two I have and a StingRay 2-12 combo.....I let the Ray go for a couple of reasons, first it was god awful heavy....second, it was more of a "specialty" amp and I wanted something a bit more versatile..and did I mention light. Also, the MAZ could cop some of those StingRay tones but the Ray could not do the MAZ thing.. A great sounding amp but not quite for me...I am thinking now of annother 28 or a Prescripton Rx....not sure senior or junior...if I go that way I think I may go with the senior and ask Doc to install me a half power switch..., or I could have a tech do it, but I would much prefer that it could be done in Zland.... just might be the ticket that Prescription....course have heard great things about the Mazerati as well...could have a half power installed on that too I would think.... I do think I will hold on to the ones that I have though, I can;t imagine not having these amps around...maybe I can stop at three...."Hey AmpMaker, set me and the boys up with annother round of Ghia;s and give us a shot of that MAZ stuff you got there, make it the 38 proof stuff too" That about says it for me...

In all honesty, I would love to have the luxury of comparing my 38 to other Z amps. But the truth is, there are NO dealers around, and I'm the only Z owner in this area. Honestly, there probably isn't another Z around for 100 miles. Finally, I just can't afford to have a bunch of amps.....wish that weren't true, but it is. Anyway, I'm hoping to attend the Z fest this year and really get a chance to hear the other models. It would be heaven for me. If I hear something that blows away my 38, maybe I'll sell mine and make the switch. But I can't imagine another amps sounding better....I'm that happy with it.

Yup, the Maz sr is amazing. I love mine... It has the exact sound I love...
I just changed my Rec and EL84's w/ all new tubes... It sounds like the day I bought it...

I've just bought a Maz 38 NR, after hearing Buddy Whittington. It is the best tone ever, with a PRS modern eagle.
