Hey ya'll, first post here on the Z Forum, because I'm about to pick up my first Dr. Z amp tomorrow. It's a Maz 38 Head and I'm wondering which speakers and which cab will be the best for that particular amp.
I know these kinds of questions are subjective but I like (1) Clean headroom (2) I don't need it to break up early (3) Loud but clear and (4) Tight bottom end, strong mids, and clear but not tinny high end.
Any suggestions?

What is the difference between a "Z-Best" cab and a Dr. Z 2x12 or 2x10 cab?
Are there normal cabs and then "Z-Best" cabs are more expensive?
Another question (sorry I'm new): can I put a Maz 38 head into a 4 ohm cab (say, a Matchless cab)?

thesooze, I don't pretend to know the answers, but I'll give some of your questions a shot anyway .. and I don't own a MAZ38, I have a Rt66 and a Ghia and I've owned a MAZ Jr in the past ... The Z-Best is Doc's closed back 2x12 cab, I used to own one before I decided a 1x12 cab was all I really needed. Great sounding cab that really projects due to its construction and the fact that its closed back. Stock speakers sound very good in this cab. The other 2x12 by the Doc is open back and I gather most folks get it with 2 Celestion Blues or maybe even two Celestion Golds - it was 'born' to service the Stang Ray, but I'm sure it is useful for other amps as well, another very good cab. If you go with a 1x12, I'd strongly consider a Celestion Gold with the Doc's convertible cab - although I've played thru neither, the reviews here tells me this would work well. I'm pretty sure the MAZ38 has 4, 8 and 16 ohm outputs. I'm sure you've already taken a look, but fwiw: drzamps.com/speakercabs.htmlGood luck. kc

Lots of questions, but what you described is pretty much a Z-Best. With the exception of breakup. The Z-Best has a G12H 30 on the bottom that when the amp is pushed... Oh man! But it has a lot of cleans that are very loud. If you absolutely had to have zero break up you could always swap out the speakers and do the Tonker / Swamp thing like Bluezsteel and BW did.
The 10's are really nice too. I haven't heard the new Z-10's... but I LOVE the old small Z 2x10 cab... nice and light but HUGE tight tone!
Either way, you really can't go wrong... I've tested the Z-Best against the best THD, Bogner and Bad Cat 2x12's... I did it objectively when I was buying this rig a few years ago, and was willing to spend the dough on what sounded the best.... Turns out the Doc knows best!

I love my Z open back 2x12 with my Sr head. It sounds awesome, but then I'm partial to open back cabs over closed back (plus, my drummers tend to like them, because they can hear me, too!). Mine just came with the standard Vintage 30 and G12H30 (same as the Z Best). The only thing I don't like is that it's pretty friggin' big (same size as the Z 2x12 combo, I believe), which means that for casual jams, the Z tends to get left behind. I'm currently looking for a 1x12 cab for taking to jams (I know I'm lazy, but for jams, the fewer trips I can make, the better, so if I can carry the head in one hand and the cab in the other, I'm set. The 2x12 is not a cab that I can easily carry in one hand - am I a wuss? Probably.).

I have a 38 combo and head; with all I have ceramic Weber BlueDog/Silver Bell 30s that sound great. The cabs are a closed back Z Best and a 3/4 back Mesa 2x12 that i sold the C90s out of and loaded with Webers. The combo's speakers are well broken in and sound great. The cabs' speakers need some more playing time, but I wouldn't hesitate, and haven't, to use both on big or small, festival or bar stages.
