Howdy!
Guess I would be the new guy. Well, lemmesee here. I've kinda fell in love with this odd guitar and I'de like a to match up a nice versatile amp to kinda flow with what it can do instead of a/b/y'ing more amps than I care to carry around. I've heard folks say the 513 is more of a studio tool but to tell you the truth it really appeals to me as a live axe as it has all those familiar tones in one guitar with just enough of its own mojo to sound fresh and distinctive to me. So I've been getting rid of stuff I don't deem worthy of the collection and I'm trying to build a sound around this geetar to be my go to girl.
So, I've played the Maz jr and sr on a the convertable 2x10 cab up in the Northwest on buckers and the single coil setting and I thought they both sounded Phenomenal, but it was really easy to get really good tone on the SC's right away. I was still foolin' with the knobs on a McCarty when I finally got dragged out but I thought I was on to somethin'. Tryed a Galaxie in Phoenix on top of a G-12-65 Loved that tweed side and the gain side was alot of fun but I think need an effects loop and honestly it was a little difficult to balance the volume switching channels but im sure with a boost and a fast foot it would work out alright.
So, heres what I guess Im after. I need a nudge. Do any of you guys use humbuckers extensively with the Maz sr or jr? I havn't been able to find any sound clips with buckers on the maz but if you have a link i would love to hear em.

Ever since I saw the vid for that guitar up on the PRS site, I've been GASsing for one of those - except that with my budget, it'll be a looooong time before I can afford one!
Let us know what you find out!

Well, a good buddy of mine got one of the brazilian rosewood models and that started the GAS pains but I looked up what they wanted for one and I had to giggle a little bit. It looked real good next to his BMW and his trophywife. But seriously, it was pure heaven playing that neck, and It put a huge smile on my face to be able to chicken pick on a PRS and then flip a switch and channel Warren Haynes without changing guitars. Its amazing how Straty and Tele'esque that guitar got on a Tone Cat and still sound very gibby too, but I want a Z. Hell, I was born in Xenia! Theres a whole lot of reasons to list to buy the Docs amps but the fact that he's building them in the Buckeye state is a clincher for me haha.
Now, Blues for the lost days started GAS again, that whole album could have been done on 10 different amps. Playing around with one made me feel the same about that amp that I did on the 513, very familiar vintage sounds but new, fresh and distinctively all its own. I imagined I might be able to coax out all classic tones and spend a lifetime unlocking new ones with the perfect one guitar, one amp rig with the amount of tones i heard on that album. I'm sure I'll add a Route 66 to the line to really get where I want to go with the "bucker mode" on the 513 but for a start I really would like to hear what people think of playing buckers on the MAZ sr.

I run a PRS Standard 22 (w/the rotary selector) w/my Sr 212 and it's freakin' amazing. Clean, crunchy...yeah, it's slammin. Fact is, I have yet to plug ANYTHING into this amp that didn't just sing - ceramic singles, alnico singles, P90s, ceramic hums, alnico hums...it's all good! Even goofed around with my mandolin and resonator one afternoon and got some great tones.

What speakers are you using in your 2x12 Bare? I Liked that G-12-65 but the Z-best with the extra V-30 seems like it would get that versatility im looking for. Need to find one of those around to play.

I use a couple different setups depending on the gig but have settled on a Weber Blue Alnico 50 and Weber 1230-55 Ceramic (like a blue/g12h30 pairing) as the 'standard' default. It's KILLER!! Get the compression and chime from the alnico and the tight/full low end and aggressive top from the ceramic. Huge tone. I do that combo for more of the top-40 (rock/pop country). For Americana/Rock I'll go the V30/G12H30 route. And, for a more contemporary 'country' sound (I'll pair the Blue Alnico with another Weber 50 watt Silver Alnico) - that is a killer, smooth tone.
Loves me some Weber speakers! MmmMmMmmmmmgood! ;D

Thanks Bare,
man I think I'm gonna go stock z-best-read that BW likes the z-best with the standard config, seems like a good place to start. I'll pick up another cab at some point and experiment with alnicos and ceramics till I find the goods. Thanks again!

Hi there wetphoenix (I'd think good combustion would be a challenge in such a state...)
I play an old '94 McCarty through my MAZ-38 NR/Zbest rig and it sounds great. I actually like it better than my Callaham. It seems to me that the MAZ Sr. is an inherently bright amp. I have to fight it with the Callaham to get good overdrive without it being too pierceing. The inherent warmth of the Buckers on the McCarty (combined with their higher output) make it much easier.
Clean though ... now that's what the Maz does best in my book. Clean strat sounds are unbelievably three dimensional.

Welp, I finally found my perfect rig. Maz+RXES+Z-Best=everything I'll ever need. I'm gonna order an alnico bluedog and a ceramic 1230-55 that Dan suggested for sho. But now I'm considering Jr's! LOL I can't believe how loud the Maz jr gets, if the Sr is even only 2 or 3db louder than that (didn't get to crank it when I played it) its gonna be overkill for 95 percent of what we do. I have a feeling this amp is gonna put me in the woodshed over the summer so I may appreciate the lower power when I attenuate too, I'm a Vampire in a duplex so the master ain't enough. A new/good large diaphragm mic may be in my future. Man that Rx has some killer cleans and with the overdose I need one just for Thorazine shuffle alone, just wow, let the monster out, let him out and play! I have a feeling I'm going to be broke for a long time here soon. BTW Dan Weller, much obliged for your help! I've read alot of the content of this sight now and have noticed you always provide good information, with a great attitude. Your a pro who uses these amps for a living and I appreciated your input very much. I'm not used to forums, the ones I've been to in the past have turned me off but this one is first class and might just turn me into a typer. I'd also like to thank Jayson Chance for all those sound clips comparing all the pedals, speakers, guitars and the minimass with these amps, absolutely a wealth of info here. I got a good laugh at the little wing reference in regard to music stores, I've been in guitar center, been in an onry mood, asked for an expensive prs and then ran through little wing, stairway and freebird very badly with my most confused face on. Good times. Have to do it just once. lol Chris

Hey Chris, Happy to help! There's a super bunch of folks here on the forum - lots of insight and a great diversity of tastes/styles. The open-minded/positive vibe definitely makes you want to type/share! Feel free to drop a line anytime! And, yes, the Jr is a LOUD beast - absolute eye opener for an 18 watt amp! It tends to slant a bit more to the Marshall voicing (more aggressive with a bump in the mid-range) when compared to the Sr (smoother, fuller/wider range w/a flatter/balanced tone). BTW, if you do hang out here too much you will wind up broke. ;D "G.A.S. happens!"

Yaknow? Maybe thats why I liked it so much. The marshal soul I got out of it sounded yummy with mahogany, but I'm gonna need two amps I think to really pull off the magic one guitar trick I'm going for. RX jr is on the short list. I wasnt suprised I couldnt get the buckers set up and the singles to both sound good w/o tweaking each to taste. I can on a Decatone but I dont want to go that route.
The Z's have such a sweet tone compared to anything else IMO that I might just end up sounding like "me". So I think it's gonna be a Maz Jr with the Z beast weber bluedog and 1230-55 with an Rx jr this summer for that rocky mountain way distortion I think I can get. mmmm yummy.

I got a maz sr 2x10 a little while ago. I haven't tried my 513 through it yet. My main live guitar with it is a McCarty (solid mahogany) with mini hums and now I LOVE my PRS Mira through it.

I play a les paul double cut as well as an L-5 through my senior, and it is great! I find that i back off the volume on the LP quite a bit for chording and so on, but for attention on stage, turn it up and listen to the sound!
