I see a lot of Tonkers on here matched with MAZ Srs. I think Buddy Whittington uses one and I love his tone (but that probably has much more to do with the magic in his fingers). I have a MAZ Sr. head and am searching for the right speaker ("right" being subjective, of course). I have a G12H30 which sounds great - almost there. I know that's what comes stock with MAZ combos. I've grown skeptical of Eminence speakers lately. I'm real curious about the ceramic Weber Blue Dog because of Jayson Chance's clip on Weber's page for that speaker. It says he's playing through a MAZ 18 but on Jayson Chance's personal Soundclick page it says he's playing a MAZ Sr. Sure sounds sweet. Lush high end on the high notes and a steely, piano like, SRV sound on the lowest notes: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=465770 third clip from bottom entitled, "Dr Z MAZ 38 Clip 1 Strat- Dr.Z MAZ 38- Weber Ceramic Blue Dog.

No magic in these ol' rigid digits! Just old habits that are hard to break. Bluzsteel Dave is the Tonker man, I bought a Swamp Thang, took it on tour and afterwards had to go to bandmate counseling. It now lives in my Deluxe Reverb, I did use it on John Mayall's Freddie King tribute album 'In The Palace of the King' quite a bit w/ the MAZ Senior and KT45 heads. Usually I use a Celestion G12H100 with any Z head, except for the cabs that Zane and Russ Hanc*ck (dang 'censorbot'!) built. The '10/12' has Eminence Wizards in it, the single 12 has an old beat up Classic Lead 80 that must be about 20 years old! (How old AM I, anyway?) My Ghia gets quite a bit of use w/ these two cabs. My Zbest has the stock Vintage 30/ Heritage setup, LOVE it w/ the KT 45, 66, Ghia and Senior heads. Also used Skip's SRZ-65 w/ the Zbest on my record, sure was easy to record. I gotta tell ya, Ronnie Crecelius gets a downright righteous tele tone with his Z 2X12 open back, and either a Ghia or a Z28. Sure would like to experiment w/ one of those.

I recently got a Maz 38, and right before I did I heard Jayson Chance's Maz 38 clips with both of these speakers. His clip with the Tonker sounded killer but he told me that the speaker is so efficient that it was hard to reel it in with such a powerful amp. That was my experience when I had the Tonker in my Mazerati - sound men hated me and I had to turn it down so low that the amp was barely warming up. Anyway, I ended up with the ceramic Blue Dog in the Maz38 and I've been really happy with it. I'd like to try a Gold in there when I get some extra $.

I have had great results with the Weber 1230-55. Rick The Weber 1230-55 is his version of a G12H30 with a low freq. cone. I'm looking for something other than the G12H30 sound. I find my 70th Anniversary to be too colored.

Any more votes for the Weber ceramic Blue Dog?

I've read about people who favor the alnico version of the Weber Blue Dog. Is that because you get earlier breakup with the alnico rather than the ceramic? I'm actually looking for more headroom.

I'm looking to pick up a Maz SR head and currently have three cabs I'll be using with it. Currently using a Route-66 and Carmen Gia heads.
I have a TruTone pine cab loaded with one Red Coat The Governor 12" and one Legend 10".
An Avatar cab with 2 x G12H 30w.
Another TruTone pine with 2 x 10" VOX Celestian Bulldog 30s.
I don't like the VOXs and am looking to replace them. They can't even handle the Gia, forget about the RT-66. So I'm thinking with the MAZ, also - n/g.
The 10/12 is killer with either the 66 or the Gia! Cuts through in a live environment beautifully. Highs remain and I can use the volume on the guitar to clean up or push the cab in most any club we've played. I like the combination of the 10 and 12 and oh, btw, it is open back. Love the Tele or the Duncan Phat-Cats through this.
The 2 x 12 is really nice also. Seems to get a little louder than the 10/12 side by side and a little more bluesier (?), maybe warmer, not as much high end as the other cabs. I believe the 10s and the pine have something to do with that. Great with humbuckers. I was going to say the Phat-Cats, too, but those pickups sound great through just about anything.
I'll be adding a 1 x12 soon and was wondering what to put in it. Guess I'll be picking up a G12H100 soon, too.
Can't wait to hear the Phat-Cats with a Maz through any of these.
BTW - I edited this to add that the only pedal I use is a Zen Drive, if any at all.

I've used a Ceramic Blue Dog with both my CG and a Maz 38 and loved the sound of both! The Ceramic Silver Bell also great with both (more Marshall-like tone).

30 watt ceramic Blue Dog/ Silver Bell mixes in my cobo and both my 2x12 cabs. Once they break in they're terrific speakers. I can only guess how good the alnicos probably sound...

While I had my Sr 212 I ran 3 different pairings and loved them all - changed for different music/needs: Started: V30/G12H30 (crunchy/punchy/balanced-fullrange) Then: Weber 50 Watt Silver/Blue Alnico combo (compressed/smooth/balanced) Last: Weber 1230-55/Blue Alnico combo (crunchy & compressed/punchy & smooth/balanced-fullrange)

So far I'll I've had a chance to try are g12h30's and vintage 30's. The g12's sound way better. I really want to try out a cab with a celestion gold, though.
