I'm using a nice, mellow, underwound Callaham. But no mater how I set the amp it's waaaay too bright. I mean tear your head off, edgy bright. I just can't find a comfort zone with this thing. My other amps include a Clark Tyger, a Clark Beaufort and a '68 Fender Princton reverb. I like the clean tone of the MAZ. But both of the Clarks are way better overdriven. I rarely use pedals asI much prefer the sound of an overdriven amp. However, I've got a Box O Rock that I've been using lately. I also use an Airbrake.
Any suggestions?

I would try a Philips/Holland 12ax7 or a NOS 5751 in V1.The stock JJ's are a little bright for my taste.

I'm assuming you're turned the cut and treble way down?

Yes Billy, With the Callaham I usually set the cut at 9 0'clock and the treble at maybe 10 o'clock, mids at 3'clock, master at Noon or 1 o'clock, bass at 9'clock and mids at 3. Master at oneish volume at oneish. with this setting my guitar stays clean almost to ten. Like I said, the pickups are underwound. I love the sound. But like I said: it stays clean. I just tried it with the master all the way on and the volume at 3 o'clock. A little noisy (hiss), but better grind. BTW, I'm using the treble pick-up. Thanks for the tips though fellows. I was not digging it this morning. I would like it to be a little warmer. Hey Billy, where's a good place to order those tubes?
Thanks, Frank

Try turning the bass up to around 1 oclock or higher if needed with your treble and mid settings. This will cause the amp to overdrive earlier with a fatter, warmer sound. Cut no higher than 9 oclock. I also will adjust volume and master to get the desired break up point for the situation

Thanks Stratosphere, Next time I pay it I'll boost the bass and see what happens. I usually keep the bass low on my amps to avoid flabiness. But it just might be the right thing for this one.
