I spent some time with a Maz 38 Sr. NR today; a fantastic amp; I'm thinking of trading in my Lone Star Special, taking a loss and picking this up. A key question:
Do you have a Reverb or an NR? Why did you pick what you picked?
The dealer I worked with (really great) suggested an NR; he feels that that have slightly more tone due to simpler sound chain.
Thanks in advance.

My $0.02 = I just got a Maz Sr. Reverb head and I don't think the reverb adds that much to it (but I have hardly fiddled with it). At this point I would probably recommend the NR. This amp sounds so good it doesn't need 'verb.

This has been discussed many times (I've posted quite a few times about it myself). I'm a big proponent of the NR head- I own both a Jr. and Sr. NR. My feelings were validated ten times over when I got a T Rex Room Mate a few months ago. That thing *really* sounds good with the MAZ's, and now I have the best of both worlds. The Room Mate keeps all my dynamics and tone intact. *Great* pedal.

I love reverb so if it's an option I'll take it every time.

I looked at and played both and went with verb. What type of playing do you do? Ive found the Z verb to be one of the best ones out there, and just prefer to have it onboard. I am currently a guy who plays mostly at home though.
Id say if you play out a lot and at good volumes I wouldnt worry about the 'verb...but if you play at home a bunch and you've always enjoyed having it go for it. I a/b'ed both side by side and really didnt notice a difference in dry tone worthy enough to say the NR was better or much different.
To each his own though...I could have just as easily been happy with a NR and a room-mate pedal.
Getting a MAZ in either config is a win-win combo, the rest is just details.

I have the SR w/verb and had the Jr NR.
If I had to buy either/both again I'm not sure which route I'd take. I never use verb but it's nice to have if necessary - especially such a great sounding reverb.
NR's have a bit more attitude...
Guess it would just depend which tone I was needing at the time of purchase.

NR w/reverb pedal or Reverb? They both smoke!! Personal preference. I have a Sr w/verb and a Jr NR with a Van Amps Solemate reverb pedal. If you you want a tad more edge an OD pedal will get you there. I have to say that the Dr Z reverb is bliss to me ears.

Maz Sr. go with reverb. Maz Jr. go with NR. I got my Sr with Verb to help with those Fender and Vox tones the Sr does so well. The Jr. is pretty aggressive and if I were to buy one I'd want to emphasize that by getting a NR model. Just .02 more added to the pile.

The Maz Sr's reverb is one of the best I've heard but in reality I don't use it that much on gigs. BUT... I grew up with Fenders and they always had it, so I feel naked with out it. BTW- just buy either one, You'll love it!

Amp reverb is so cool for the stuff I like. Listen to a lot of Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green and Danny Kirwan. Twin Reverbs with JBLs and the reverb is always on, not studio plate reverb. BB King Live At The Regal, same thing. Lots of non rocker blues guys use it when recording and live on their old Super Reverbs. I love it on my Maz jr and sr.

If you're planning on traveling a lot in a bus or an airplane, maybe you should go the NR route w/ an FX loop. Lately I've been putting my 'verb tub, bag, cables and all, in my suitcase 'til I get to the bus/rent car, then it goes gig to gig in my gigbag, so it doesn't have to ride in the bus bay and disintegrate before showtime. I'd like to see the TSA inspector's face when they X-Ray my suitcase, no TELLIN' what they think. If they DO think. Those little Accutronix tubs are notoriously finicky and fragile, they're assembled w/ molex connectors that the wires break off of everytime you look at it the wrong way...don't know WHY they can't build 'em like they used to, nearly indestructible in those old Fenders that STILL work after 40 years. A certain amp designer/builder I am well acquainted with once likened the springs in an old Twin to a somewhat, uhh, less 'firm' (read: saggy) pair of you-know whats.

I like my reverb in my Maz 38 and Maz 18 heads. It won't be going in a bus, just in the back of my Avalanche.

I think I'd just get a digital reverb pedal for traveling. That's a shame that Accutronics won't fix that problem. Doc said on a thread once that they won't even admit a problem! We all know there is a problem. I never had a tank go bad until the last ten years and now I've had several. Just ain't right!

I can't get a digital THERMOMETER or ANYTHING ELSE DIGITAL that'll WORK for me. Dang it, seems like the FX level and the dry level are always too far apart when you're playing clean, whip the volume on the guitar up for a solo and its instant 'Misirlou' drowning in weird sounding 'verb.

That's true. Pedal reverbs don't like a hot signal, I forgot about that. Zs effects loop always cuts the volume unless your pedal happens to have a volume boost in it. The T-Rex might be able to make up the lost volume?

Millsap's got one, maybe he'll let me give 'er a whirl. Sure would be easier than draggin' a LIVE, ARMED reverb pan thru the airports of the world ;^)

I have a MazNR going into a Blue/G12H cab.I run a wet dry rig using a 1x12 cab powered by a Crate Power Block/Analogman modded DD-3 for my wet signal.I run out of a line out box into the delay-Power Block. It works great.
