I currently own a Maz Senior 38 and know that the cab choices are limitless... I don't have the opportunity where I live(Asheville, NC) to drive to the local boutique store and try them out. I have experimented with a cheep cab and think that the Weber Silver Bell and Blue Dog combo is killer. I am interested in the Z-Best speaker cab, but they are just so expensive. Everyone seems to think that that Z-best cabinet is the best sounding. What about the Z 2x12 open back? Would there really be that big of a difference between a Z-Best and say a cheaper Avatar Cab/Lopo line? -Ashevilleguy

ash, I was in the same boat. I heard a Z best 2 years ago and wanted one since then. I got one last week and love it. I will be giging with it this weekend.

I think the Z 2x12 Open-Back was a nice addition to the line, but definately check out the Z-Best OR a Z 4x10....GREAT Cabinet also. That Senior will sound GLORIOUS through the 4x10, plus when using it In-Doors, it fills the whole place with sound.
It's tough to pass up a Z-Best for ANY other Cabinet though. It works so well with ALL of Z's Amps
It may be worth a drive to FatSound in Cary anyway. That

Z-best is hands down the nicest cab on the market. I've compared to THD etc... The thing about it to keep in mind is that it's heavy.
The Z-2x10 cab is also pretty sweet.

I'm using the THD cuz I bought it 4 years ago and it's paid for. Back then it was probably the best in it's class. I still think it's purty dang nice but not as ballsy as a Z Best.....but cheaper and you can find used ones from time to time. In fact, I have come close to selling mine a time or two because a 1 - 12 is all I generally use especially now with the C-Gold. Now a Z 210 cab is plenty stout, got one of dem too.

I owned a Z-Best and Avatar at the same time so I got to do an A/B comparison. It's close but the Z-Best did win. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an Avatar if money was an issue.
You might even try to get a used Avatar 1x12 until you can afford a Z-Best. I use my Avatar 1x12 quite alot.

I recently bought a MAZ 38 head and picked up a Leyland cab (solid pine, custom size) loaded with Swamp Thangs. The Leyland isn't really a cheaper option, but I definitely think you should check them out. One thing I have noticed though - I've found that the best sound, all other things being equal, comes from running a 4OHM cab (two 8's in parallel)...IMHO.

I finally got to use my Z Best the last two gigs. Oh my, do I love it. It is very chunky. The keyboard player, who stands next to me says I should bring it to every gig regardless of where we play. I still do like the 2X10. Just as zandiego says, they are nice and light. I would love to hear that set up of the two 2X10 cabinets.

I'm considering a Maz SN and a zbest cab as well.
Though my concern is what sounds better. Open back or closed. 10's or 12's..? I have a maz jr and its nice and punchy, but i feel as if it lacks in the bottom end area...

JDesigns makes beautiful cabs and will make them to your specs. They are the most reasonably priced from what I've seen. They use the exact same tolex, corners & piping Dr. Z uses and you have a choice of grille material. He can also make a Z Best clone for less.

What is the difference between a "Z-Best" cab and a Dr. Z 2x12 or 2x10 cab? Are there normal cabs and then "Z-Best" cabs are more expensive?

My favorite with the MAZ Sr. NR head is an open back 2x12 loaded with Celestion Golds. This is hands down my favorite setup for a wide variety of music. I do everything from country, to blues, to classic rock with this rig, and I never fail to get compliments on my tone. I was a huge fan of the RxES running with 1 Gold, but then I got the MAZ and 2x12 with Golds. Needless to say, my RxES isn't seeing as much playtime lately.

Ashevilleguy,
I did the driving and testing for you. I brought my Maz Sr to the shop I bought it from and tested a top of the line THD 2x12, Budda 2x12, a Bad Cat 2x12 and the Z-Best. The Z-best just sounded so much better. I was all set to buy the THD, but the Z-Best won hands down.
The Z-Best is a very tight cab... closed back and Thiele ports... It's heavy! Built like a tank.
