The last couple of gigs I've lost alot of headroom. Very gritty when turned up. Master all the way and volume 1/2 way up. It's usually really clean here for me. I switched out the power tubes to see if that was it. I haven't seemed to lost any volume just headroom big time. Anyone know which tube(s) I should switch out for this. I'm assuming it's tubes. My amp is a Maz 38 head w/reverb going into a Zbest 2x12 cab.
thanks, Dante

Retube time. You won't believe how much better it'll sound.

I would have thought power tubes, but if ya already tried that then my guess is V1. If that's not it then replace your Phase Inverter.

On a Maz 38 you state you have the master at full and the volume up 1/2 way? First question... How loud do you play? Cause that is freekin loud! Secondly the Volume (pre) up beyond 11 will start to breakup the pre-amp tubes. Question: Do you use an Attenuator (airbrake)? If so, what settings do you have that on? Question: What kind of cab are you running?
If you have to play that loud, I suggest instead of the 12ax7's that are in there now, you switch V1 and PI (Phase Inverter) to a 5751. These will give you more head room.
The output tubes should be GT EL84 #6's. What rating did you get? The lower the # the more breakup the tubes will have.
More info is needed....

Yeah....we're a fairly loud band. I play with some older guys that are deaf. I usually keep my amp down low so the volume blows past my legs. I do record my gigs regularly and the volume is perfect out in front.
I'm so frustrated...had a gig tonight and it just sounds terrible now. Had no volume tonight and the tone is really lacking. I've switched out a ton of tubes and still am not getting what I was getting. Which spot is the Phase Inverter in?
I put in a fresh set of Groove Tubes #6's for the power tubes (EL84's). I don't use an airbrake. I bought one but don't use it. At 11 or 12 I was getting a slight break up which I like but now it's just been too much breakup. I use a 2x12 Zbest cab. Thanks guys for trying to help. Maybe I need to take it in to someone. I just don't trust alot of guys. When I did get the new power tubes I was getting some noise.....crackling and sometimes when put the amp on standby it would pop. Maybe they are bad too???

Speakers will break in over time... don't know how long you've had them. If you were getting crackling sounds like you got some bad tubes... I'd replace the tubes, but if you have your receipt contact Myles (on our forum...) Also, Try 5751 in V1 and the PI is the closest to the output tubes. If this is NR it's V3, V5 if it's a reverb...
The crackling is definitely not a good sign, but it could be anything, bad cable, bad ground on the guitar, etc... The level your running your amp it is going to break up. 5751's instead of 12ax7's will help tame that... Honestly, when I play out my levels on my maz sr are: Master - 10 am Vol - 12pm (I want break up...)
And I use a Z-Brake with it set to either #4 or bedroom when the night starts and #3 after the place fills in. Anything more than that, the bartender would throw us out.
Don't know where you play that you could play that loud... Have you thought of having a sound man?
