I was thinking of a Weber ceramic blue dog rated at 50 watts. I love my G12H30 in my other amp but even though the Dr. puts it in the Maz Sr. combo I think that the 30 watt rating is too low for a 38 watt amp.

No doubts here. A Celestion Gold!

I have not heard a Celestion gold, but from what I have heard, the Alnico Blue Dog sounds amazing with this amp.

I've been using a Tone Tubby Alnico for a while. I really like it!! It took a while to break in, but now it has a really nice sound. I also have a zbest with stock speakers & a cabinet with an Eminence Governor, and while they all sound good, I prefer the Tone Tubby.......

I've got a Maz38sr 1X12 combo that I put a Weber 50 watt blue dog in (light dope). Definitely punched it up over the stock Celestion (which is a very good speaker by the way).
Not sure what you're looking for tonally, so I'll simply say the Blue Dog gives me "more" of that Celestion sound. To me, it's a G12 on steroids. If you play country or blues and want a slight breakup quality, this is the one for you. If you want booming bottom end and thump, it ain't.
ahh dern...forgot to add - it's the Alnico version...

i listened to BuddyW's clips and he uses a Tonker. That was good enough for me. It takes a bit to get used to the amp with the Tonker as it is a different beast than the G12H. that being said it can do all things well. Clean, OD and balls to the wall distortion...I did install a beamblocker and once that was in place the whole sound came together..worth a try and not too expensive either... your milage of course may vary

I'm using a Emi Cannabis Rex right now and I like it a lot for Fender tones. I'm looking to get Vox tones out of the Sr soon so I may look at a Celestion Gold or a Weber Blue Dog Alnico 50 watt model. Both have gotten great reviews here at the Forum, as has the Tonker. The Rex is a cheaper alternative to the Tone Tubby if your on a budget, but it's a ceramic model. If ya want Alnico you'll have to go with TT.

I have the Tone Tubby in an open back Avatar, and the Governor in a closed back Avatar. I also have a Zbest, but I didn't like lugging it to gigs. So I went with the Avatar's with one 12"--they only weigh about 30 lbs or so loaded. Of the two Avatar's, I use the one with the Tone Tubby the most. It seems to "sing" better. Well made and fairly inexpensive cab. I play out using either my strat, '52 tele re-issue, or a Gretsch 6120-1960 re-issue. Each works well with the Maz 38 & tone tubby. I'm happy with the rig--it sounds good and it's fairly light. It always brings a smile to my face when I plug in!! Although I have a pedal board at gigs, I find I have the pedals turned off probably 90% of the time. I just use them for a brief tweak here and there.

Celestion Gold. Just killer in this amp. Tone tubbys have been a little too dark for my tastes. YMMV

I'm using a ceramic Blue Dog in mine and it sounds great but I really want to try a Gold. Although I gotta say, I recorded our gig last weekend and I was really pretty happy with my tone. I'm sort of wondering whether dropping $279 will give me that much of a noticeable improvement.

The clip on the Blue Dog page by Jayson Chance is exactly the sound I'm looking for. Check it out: taweber.powweb.com/weber/c12b.mp3. That's +1 to confirm what I'm thinking would be the best speaker for my MAZ head. What cabinet are you using?
