Going on 1 1/2 years with the Maz38 Sr Reverb and it continues to be the best amp I've had the pleasure of owning. I seem to have caught a "tweak bug" and would like to see what a different V1 will do for me. The amp came with a set of Svetlanas that the Doc was using in his amps when I bought it. Fundamental tone of the amp is excellent, although perhaps a bit bright. Interested in any suggestions for a 12AX7 in V1, and how the tone might differ from the Svetlana. For the purposes of this discussion, assume cost is not an issue - NOS and current manufactured tubes are possibilities.
For the record I have changed the power tubes twice - the amp gets regular use and I did notice a loss of sparkle and depth as the power tubes aged. Each time I went with the stock GT EL84-S at a rating of 6 and was very pleased with the results - the sparkle, chime and swirly harmonics all came back. Current power tubes are 2 months old and sound great.
Thanks!

I like Ei Elites in V1 & V2 and a Phillips AT7 for the phase inverter.

I like the Tung Sol reissues in V1 but am also going to try some EH Mullard clones just for giggles.
JJ/Tesla has some nice high gain 12ax7s for V1 as well.

I went to a NOS GE 5751. It tamed a bit of the harshness and smoothed out the sound, (or so it appeared to my ears).

5751 is definitely the way to go for smoothing the high end. Sounds great in this amp. Sounds great in the P/I slot as well

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. Good to see that there are some current issue tubes being recommended - makes it easier to justify some experiementation....
