Anybody try out the mods doc posted for the Maz 38 in his news section?

I figure, "Why mess with perfection?" I'm not even curious to swap tubes. That's just me, though.

I've done just the preamp tube mod on my maz 18...a little off-topic, I know. I've also tried out a few Maz 38s and I think the stock EL84s sound great. I've tried JJs and I dig the GTs much more. For me, the JJs are too harsh sounding.

How was the preamp tube mod?
did you keep it or go back to stock?

I put 5751's in v1 and v3 (nr)... liked it. But it's nice to go back to the JJ's and the LPS.
No, I would never do any mods on my amps. I love it the way it is.

I'm with the 'never mod my Zs' guys. I figure if the good Doctor wanted these changes he'd have made them himself or least strongly urged us to do so. It helps that I am probably the least electrically competent person on earth so I would never do anything but ruin a circuit if I screwed around with it.

I switched the tubes as the Doc suggested. It did smooth things out, in a good way. Slightly different. I like the tone out of the box so I don't think I would change anything else.

I can definitely see where the "don't mess with it" folks are coming from - after all, if you're happy, you're happy.
But consider the source of the mods though... Not your average modder - this is the Doc we're talking about here!

The only mod I have done and kept is put Ei Elites in the V1 and V2 positions. Mine came with NOS 12AT7 in the phase inverter, which I prefer and use in my Maz Jr as well. I also use a Weber Beam Blocker, for better sound dispersion.
I tried a few different tubes and speakers and am very happy with the stock G12H, GT/JJ output tubes and just the amp the way I have it in general.
Keep in mind I am a constant tweaker. I have tried 3 different types of caps in my Allen Old Flame and swapped countless pickups and pedals. The Maz amps really do it for me.
