I finally got around to doing some speaker swapping in my Mesa 4X10 cab. I bought two Weber Blue Pups, 16ohm 30watt, from Deaconblues about a month or so ago. The original speakers in the Mesa cab are Jensen Repro's P10-R 8ohm 25watt (I think). I put the two Webers in and wired them in parallel for 8ohms. I wired the two original Jensens in parallel for 4ohms. This way I could switch between the two pairs to do a good comparison. Running the RXJr set to a nice clean, the Webers sounded fantastic. They blew the Jensen Repro's out of the water. There wasn't too much competition here. They had the sweet chiming highs, full mids, and FAT lows. W/ some slight breakup, they sounded great w/ the "just a little hair" settings. However, on the full blown "Benttop" setting (everything dimed, master as high as you and your neighbors can tolerate), I was disappointed. The bottom just flubbed out. I gradually backed the bass all the way off and backed the mids back too. I couldn't get rid of the flubby low end running the RXJr "crunchy." The older Jensen Repro's stood up a little better, although not nearly as nice as the Weber C1225 & C1230 I put in my Marshall 1936.
Is this typical for AlNiCo speakers?
Any thought, comment, or suggestions would be appreciated...

After neglecting my RXJr for a little while in favor of the MAZ Jr NR through the Weber Blue Pups, I took the RXJr to rehearsal last night. I ran it through those Weber Blue Pups that I wasn't fond of in this pairing. It sounded very different (in a good way)! W/ the Bass at about 9:00, the Mids about 12:00, and the Treble and Vol dimed (Master 'bout 12:00), I got some great dirt tones. I didn't hear the flub I was getting before. The cleans were spectacular. Even when I kicked in the BB+, there wasn't any farting out. I don't know what the difference is (maybe I'm going deaf). I've pounded these speakers the last few weeks w/ the MAZ Jr NR constantly. Maybe they're breaking in some. I always thought the speaker would get softer (w/ possible more flub) as they broke in. I spoke w/ Ted Weber about my experience (as I wanted his recommendation for two more 10" speaks to complete the cab) and he recommended the AlNiCo Silvers, 30 watt, lightly doped, and broken in. He says they will help offset the flub of the Blue Pups when driven. I asked him about ceramics, and he said the Blue/Silver AlNiCo combination is just what I'm looking for. We did spend some time going over what and how I play. So now I have a new found respect for my Weber Blue Pups and their creator, Ted Weber. What a great guy! I can't wait for the Silvers to come in...
