can someone tell me if the 38 sr will do the raw big tone that the mazerati is noted for? i have a mazerati 1x12 combo , and im thinking about tradeing in on a 38 sr 2x12 combo , i want to expand my tone versatility , but at the same time not lose what im used to hearing.
thank's jake.

Tough to say... The 38 and Mazerati are as different as they are similar. But to keep from giving you a generic answer, I'll try to give some generalizations about both amps.
Both can be aggressive, while both can be quite refined.
To my ears, the difference in overall voicing between the two is this:
The Mazerati is a bit more in the Vox camp when set clean. Really pretty & chimey cleans can be had. Tighter bass than an AC30, more of a "modern" take. If you are familiar with a Matchless DC30, I think the Mazerati is similar in it's voicing. As you crank the volume, Mazerati can take on more of a Marshall character. Nice bite & upper mids in the driven tones...
The MAZ 38 has a bit more "huff". Tough lower mids that are a bit more in the early Fender (tweed/brown) camp. As you crank the volume, gets a lot of growl. But still, the dynamic response of the EL84's is there, so I've always said that the MAZ38 sort of sounds like a cross between an AC30 and a Bassman.
Both amps are equally versatile. The 38 has a bit more flexibility because of the expanded EQ and master volume.
So I'll put it to you this way: If you grew up on British tones, like Vox/Marshall/HiWatt, etc. Then the Mazerati would be the ticket. Stylistically I'd say it leans toward the pop/rock side.
If you grew up more familiar with old Fenders, early Marshalls, etc. Then the MAZ38 is the key. Probably leans a bit more towards rootsy styles. Blues, country, vintage rock...

I've never played a Maz-38, but I own a Mazerati. One thing to note is that speakers make a huge difference in sound on any amp. I was using two weber blues with my Mazerati, it sounded great but I was missing some low end. I switched one of the speakers to a 1230-55 and bang, this is the sound I've been hearing in my head in comparison to Brad Paisley's MOTT Album.
Any reason you want to trade the Mazerati??

I agree. At times my Maz38 gets very close to the Fender Tweed sound, kind of bassmanish. But it really shines when you can open her up and push the tubes hard. That in my opinion is where the Maz 38 is at its best.
