On second thought, don't. I want to remain happy with my Route!
No, go ahead...
Thx

Great question, since they both have reps as having Marshall-esque qualities. I'm curious too.

I've heard Route 66 is more JTM45 sounding.. nice old grind. But the Remedy is like a Plexi.. like 68 to 70 spec.. tight bass and super crunchy.
I have no experience with either though.

Well, as the owner of one of the first Route 66's that I pre-ordered and bought directly from the Doc, I might have a few hours on the 66 The 66 and Remedy are very different amps. I guess when you talk about the 66 you have to differentiate between the early ones with less filtering and the overtones and the later ones with more power supply filtering, as they sound different. Be that as it may, the 66 is said to be JTM45-like and the Remedy Plexi-like. The 66 (at least mine) is very different from any JTM45 I've ever heard. My 66 has no "sweet spot", it sounds very full at all volumes. It is a dark and "smoky" amp; the highs are clear and harmonics jump off the guitar but even with the treble maxed the beautiful fat midrange dominates the sound and the highs are more relaxed. The bass is very full and the overtones just add to the fatness. It has as softer attack; because of the ultralinear design and power supply it's got a great compression that makes it very easy to play and felt "broken in" right out of the box. With the Doc designed "short box head" bass and treble controls you can make the top break up and keep the bass clear or make the top stay clean and make the bass wooly OR crank everything for full spectrum fun. The newer Route 66's are still great but are a little tighter (ala the KT45). This is a great sound too; someday I'll get a newer 66 too just for fun. The Remedy has the normal channel and high channel volumes that let you dial in more upper mid grind or lower mid grind. When you crank it all the frequencies crunch; that's just the way the preamp works on Plexi type amps. The attack has more ping and chime, it's got a little MAZ or Rx in it. It's a more "balanced" amp than the 66 frequency wise; the mids still are the amp's signature but they're not as up front as the 66. There's a ton more highs on tap in the Remedy if you set it that way. The Remedy, thanks to the half power switch, will let you get grind at a lower volume than the 66. When it does grind those 6V6's definitely sound vastly different than the KT66's in the Route 66. The Remedy also sounds and feels great at all volumes even though the only thing it shares in common with the 66 is that it's made from glass, aluminum, metal, wood, and tolex. At the end of the day the 66 has one *great* sound. The Remedy is a little more versatile both control and volume wise. They're both candidates for the "top ten amps of all time" list.

My Route 66 is a 2003. I think it qualifies as a "new" Route 66 with the higher filtering. Now I want to compare mine to an "early" one. That Remedy doesn't sound too bad either.

I need to go listen to a RT66 again. Back in 2002 a friend had one and I played it for a little while through a Mesa 2x12 w/v30's. I am almost certain the v30's were not broken in. The tone of the 66 through that cab was harsh and ugly. It had none of what I would describe as creamy tones, only harsh and brittle. It almost sounded like and overdriven tone and a clean tone mixed together. I have heard clips of the 66 that I like. When I go to play one I am going to take a broken in cab with me.

My 66 is a 2004. Phil's comment about post '99 66s feeling "tighter" compared to pre '99 66s, seems a very apt description.
