I have recently added a maz 38 sr nr head to my gear. I had read that the newer ones had a fan? is that just the combos? mine did not and it is new.... i have played it 6 or 7 times for 2 hrs or more and while it does heat up it appears to breath out the top ok...... being my 1st z i am quite enamored and i will always be curious... any info on this subject would be appreciated...

I believe mine's recent too, but no fan. I have a little Honeywell desk/floor fan (about 7") that I just put face down on top of the amp or right behind it to dissipate the heat from those blazing 84s...

simple enough to install one, I use fans in all of my amps...not totally sure how much it helps but I am sure it don;t hurt.... I use the metal ones from the Shack, mount it to the side or bottom and use a seperate plug to eliminate any trouble that could be had by using it in the amps circuts....a good investment in my opinion....

Mine is 2005 and has a fan, I've actually been looking for ways to defeat it during recording, but I haven't found that info yet.

I don't think the heads get a fan because the tubes are on top of the chassis.

I think billyguitar is correct - with the tubes on top of the chassis the heat dissipates better. My Mazerati combo gets really hot, so I bought a little 4" desk fan at the hardware store. It sits in the bottom of the amp and it's whisper quiet. Works like a champ.

I have a 2007 Sr w/verb (head) and it doesn't have a fan. Though it heats up, I really don't see a need for a fan on mine. The vent on the top seems to do the trick just fine.

Well, After my first gig with my new MAZ38NR I was amazed at how great these amps sound on stage. Every one commented on the tone. After the amp being on for 5 straight hours, when packing up I noticed the el84's were blazing hot. I earlier mentioned my 07 model 1x12 combo did not come with a fan. Well, I broke down and went to my local Radio Shack and purchased a 4" 120vac computer fan for 24.99 part # 273-241, Then over to Lowes to buy a pack of "L" brackets that come with mounting screws, and a pack of 2" machine screws with nuts to mount the fan to the brackets. Also a 2 conductor 7' extension cord clipped off the female end and wired up the fan. To get everything in I had to remove the 2 back panels and the speaker to mount the fan with the screw gun. Using the extension cord to wire up the fan keeps the fan on it's own circuit and does NOT interfere with the electronics of the amp. Anyway, 40 minutes later a fan that blows 65 CFM and the 84's are staying at a comfortable level and may last a little longer. the whole project cost about 35.00 but worth it. The fan is very quite, but for recording of course you would want it off. Attached is a link to an after pic in case anyone with the newer combo's is intrested... i193.photobucket.com/albums/z89/w5mg/DSC00006.jpg
