IS that the one from Lauzon's? They had a couple of maz 38 heads and a gold can there last time I was in.

The Maz 38 seniors are just great amps.

I bought my Maz 38 head at Lauzon's about 18 months ago. Love the amp. I have a Zbest cab with 2x12's, but it's rarely moved out of the practice room, (too heavy!!). I now have two Avatar 1x12 cabs, (an open back & a closed back). One has an Eminence Governor & one has an alnico Tone Tubby. I love the flexibility of bringing either cab or both. Plus each cab only weighs about 30 lbs loaded. It makes a much easier rig to move than that 55 lb Zbest......I've been meaning to head back to Lauzon's to check out what they have....seems like a nice place to do business.

I was in this week and they had a pretty good selection. There was a CG combo, two Maz 38 heads and a combo, a Z28 head, a route 66 head, a 212 Stangray, and a couple of cabs. They usually have at least 5 or 6.

I actually didn't get it at Lauzon, I got it from boutiquetone in montreal. Somebody had bought it from lauzon 6 weeks ago and wanted something else so he brought it into the store...
Wow, does that 1 by 12 gold speaker rip! The amp is so versatile, but it takes time to dial in the tone because of all the controls.. I'm used to my delta which has treble bass and volume....

Any of you guys ever try some of the mods that have been posted on the forum for the Mz 38?

Not me. I don't need more gain. If I did a boost pedal would do it fine.

Agreed 100%, you can crank the pre-amp for some juice, but one of the mods posted said it can smoothen out some of the high-end when it breaks up...

Sometimes, when the rock bug bites and I want to rock out a bit, I push the front of the amp with a compressor mostly set to clean boost. It sounds great like that. The last gig I used it was a clean tone for a jazz club. Sounded super smooth on top there too. Mine has an Alnico Tone Tubby in it and that has a smoother top than the stock Celestion G12H30. To me I don't see how it could get any smoother. Your Gold ought to be super sweet on top.

it is! I've never used a compressor before.. so it basically takes down some of the highs and bite?

I swapped out the rectifier for a NOS JAN Phillips from Mike at KCA. Also replaced V1 with a NOS 5751. I really liked both changes. But before changing anything, play it for a while--it took me a long time to discover all of the sounds that amp can make!

A compressor will take out some of the bite but good ones don't take away highs. A touch of compression on a solo is what you're getting when you crank a good non-master volume tube amp. You know, where it starts singing? A compressor helps get that feel at a lower volume. For extreme compression listen to Bonnie Raitt play slide. I like to set them so they just pump a little and also provide a mild volume boost. One can really help when you keep getting the "turn it down!" notes from the manager.

There's a lot of good ones. Just about everyone likes the Keeley. I like my little green Guyatone. Try whatever the store has. I don't think there are really any bad ones anymore.

Congratulations on the new Maz Sr. Nice, I don't have any compressor advice but do have a couple of fun things to try. My 38 head had 5751s in V1 & V2. That was a nice smooth rich tone. Sounds like you appreciate the pre-amp drive so it may not be the best solution for you however it allows me to crank the master higher for my playing situations, for me (YMMV) cranking the master gives me a richer bottom end. Also I've been running the bass, middle and treble dimed. I was surprised, it's not for everyone but it works well for me.
Have fun, that's a great amp!

Hey Stan, My favorite for now... is a Weber Blue Dog Alnico 50w in an open back cab. Ocassionaly a Texas Heat in a different open back cab. All my cabs are 1x12.

Drew:
I ended up buying Yup's 1x12. It will be heading to Michigan shortly. You mentioned diming the treb/bass/mids. Do the tone controls act like my Rt. 66 where you start getting some gain after 12:00 on your tone knobs?

Hey Tim, First contratulations on your Maz Sr! Sorry for the late response. I've been hitting the salt mines hard lately. (aka day job) IMO The maz tone controls do not act like the RT66, KT45 (not tried a Z28 but would like too) by adding drive past the 12:00 settings. At first I ran my Maz Sr tone controls on the conservative side; treble and bass around 9:00 - 10:00 and mid a bit less. I saw somewhere in the forum to dime all of the tone controls. I did and I liked it! My skewed mind interpreted diming the tone controls to letting all of the preamp signal drive those wonderful toneful phase inverter and output sections, i.e. not limiting frequencies with the tone controls. YMMV. Did it add a little more drive? Probably, but not like the RT66 types do. Below are my fav settings for El Sr, big and full but not too loud, again YMMV. Hope this helps.

The tone controls on the Maz amps are more traditional. they just shape the tone, not add gain.
