I have a relatively new MAZ 18 NR head with the original tubes: Groove Tubes in V1, JJ in V2 and Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V3. When the volume and master were dimed, I got quite a bit of ticking and general noise, So i started substituting the 12AX7s with NOS Tung-Sols. I found that the noise was greatly diminished by putting the NOS tubes in V1 and V3. The amp sounded great as well (not that it sounded bad before).
Has anybody else had a similar experience with GTs or Sovteks being noisy (even when new)?
Thanks.

Funny you mention that. I swapped in a NOS tungsol in V1 pr my Maz and it was a big difference, excellent warmth and low noise. Love those tubes, one of my all time favorite 12AX7's.
As for the Sovtek, the R1's are quite noisy, the R2's slightly better, and the LPS and EH 12AX7 are quite good, but you can get a dud with any of them.

Just for reference,
a GT 12AX7R is either a Sovtek 12AX7WA or 12AX7WC. The C's are usable. The R's really are not from my point of view in any path of tone generation such as V1 in most amps. WAs are OK for effects loop drivers. The WA is the least articulate and lowest gain 12AX7 type produced today.
The 12AX7R2 is the Sovtek 12AX7LPS
The 12AX7R3 is the 12AX7 EH (Electro Harmonix.
If you have clicking or popping or his that comes and goes it is a bad tube and can happen with any of these. The tube should be replaced under GT warranty if less than 6 months old.

Thanks for the info, Myles. I was suspicious because it largely stopped with the Tung Sols. I tried to catch you at the 65 Amps booth two or three times at NAMM but it never worked out. I was hoping to meet you.

I was hoping to meet you. I was running around a lot and only went down to NAMM Saturday. I can only deal with one day there. But ... if you are ever in the area near me let me know and we can meet without all the chaos of something like NAMM. Then again ... "fastfrets" .... Mike Tuttle? We did get together at NAMM ... or maybe the party Saturday night if you are who I am thinking you are as I have some of your business cards that you or somebody I am confusing your name handle on here gave to me at NAMM.
