I own a Route 66 and am pretty happy with the amps ability to handle pedals and I like the thick tone. I am a Strat player and am very jealous though of Buddys lead tone on the Mayall clips. That is the exact tone I have had in my head for years. I am unable to get this warm and singing a tone from the Route 66 without using pedals. I really can't duplicate that tone even with pedals it's just not the same. Is anyone able to get that Buddy tone with thier Maz38 or is this more a function of the Lenz Strat with higher K pickups or humbuckers. I know Buddy has a Lenz Strat but I don't know what pickups he uses. I have a very good Custom Shop Strat with a Mannmade bridge and Vanzandt Blues pickups. Any comments would be helpful.

The 66 has only 3 knobs if I remember. Vol, Treble and Bass. The Maz is a Master Vol amp with a Master knob and Volume knob. BW has his volume (gain) cranked for full tube breakup.
I'd say it's the amp getting the tone, but then I'd be short changing BW. It's a combination of a lot of things. Mostly BW's great playing ability, the Amp and how he has it set.
But your correct, the 66 unless turned up all the way wont do it. Try getting a Z brake. Attenuate the amp, then crank the volume. That might do the trick. setting and then crank the Volume. Th

Ya gotta be BW to sound like BW ;^)
I do get in the ball park of those tones with my Jr NR these days. Played a 66 for awhile (3 of them actually) and they are soooo different don't think you'll get there.
Purdy sure that Strat your refering to is not a Lentz........

Wow, thanks for the quick response. I have tried an Airbrake, maybe I need to check the bias but cranked, I am almost in Angus Young land. It has an almost Vox like Chime but much thicker and it's a great rock power chord sound with nice note separation etc. but I think it is the master Volume down, gain up setting that is giving Buddy that nice smooth semi dirty bite and I know tone is in the hands, up to a point. A friend of mine once complemented Ronnie Earl on the tone of his new Twin Reverb and he just held up his hands with raised eyebrows as if to say, "this is where my tone comes from pal." Point well taken Ronnie but there is a reason why your not playing through a Roland Blues Cube or a solid state Crate. The 66 is just a different tone. I guess it's a Maz38 for the Blues sets and switch heads to the 66 for the Hendrix style last set finale. Nothing wrong with that. The 66 is hard to part with because it is the best clean sound I've ever had and this is going back to 72 playing out of just about anything I wanted including amps that were older than I was. Thanks Paul.

I asked Buddy via email and he assured me that the Strat on the Mayall 70th B-day DVD is indeed a Scott Lentz. I didn't ask what pickups but that is good to know and ty for the response. I have tried everything probably 20 different pedals, thank god for Ebay and I think you are right, not going to get there with the 66. I guess it's more credit at Richmond Music lol. Thanks Tele62

Hey Alex, might help a little if you have .011's on your guitar, they just seem to make mine a little 'stouter'. That 66 is a fine amp, jes' floor it! "I think it is the master Volume down, gain up setting..." More like, Master volume UP, Gain UP, disowned by family, evicted, unemployed....

BW, I loved the show you guys did last year at the Music Hall in Portsmouth NH.
It was really awesome cause I got to meet you, and Robben Ford signed my wife's red leather jacket on one sleeve, and John Mayall signed the other sleeve.
Just a great time.

I sure wish we could do another tour like that, man how educational can ya get? And have good catering and a nice room on top of it all, THIRTY-EIGHT DAYS IN A ROW! YIPPEEE! It also led us to having Robben guest on John's new album playing his tribute to Freddie, "Cannonball Shuffle". Doing a session with Robben Ford on guitar, not too shabby fer a wore out ol' Texan like me...

I was the one gettin' the guitar lessons! Didn't absorb much, still sound like me, dangit! Just got this from John's webmistress...a little backhanded, maybe? At least www.allaboutjazz.com spelled everybody's name right this time. "The Bluesbreakers display a similar sense of commitment to the music and Mayall. On cuts such as “You’ve Got Me Licked” the rhythm section of drummer Joe Yuele and bassist Hank Van Sickle recall Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble in their surety if not flair. And when guitarist Buddy Whittington takes over for vocals as well as lead guitar on “Big Legged Woman” he demonstrates how he turns his limitations into strengths: the simplicity of his playing and lack of affectation in his singing focus his emotion." Wish my ma could read that one.

Simplicity of his playing? Are they on crack?!? I played that song 6 times in a row on my way home the other night. My new 560watt 5 speaker system in the car... Thought the windows were going to blow out! Simplicity my a$$!

To the poster asking about the Lentz pickups. Buddy can confirm this but I suspect they are only low to medium in ouput. Scott's not a fan of overwound pickups.

Yeah Alex, check 'em out at www.lentzguitar.com shoot Ian an email and ask him about it. Really great guys there at Scott's shop, Scott, Scott Jr. and Ian Anderson, they'll be happy to fill ya in on the details but I agree w/ Billy, I think the pickups are fairly standard output.

Hey, BW? You ever play out in Virginia or NC? Those are my stomping grounds, not to be confused with my coffee grounds.

We were just in Falls Church at the State Theater and we used to do the Wolftrap festival. I know that's 'really' DC, we have been known to get to Richmond but its been a long time. (TOO long.) The Robben/Eric Bibb/John Mayall thing we did awhile back came to Durham at the college there, and we used to play a little club called Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. AND we played inside a shopping mall once in Charlotte opening for Tower of Power, man were they GREAT.

The Cat's Cradle-- I've seen more shows there than ANYWHERE! Since 2006, they've been smoke free (what a relief). I got tired of burning my clothes after each show. I was running out of jeans and black t-shirts.
Carrboro is home to one of my favorite restaurants, "Carrburritos"!
Man, that's 25 minutes from where I grew up.
