i would like to thank those of you that gave me your opinions...

Welcome new guy... You don't say what kind of music you play, or what you are trying to do....(that would help)....but anyway.... The MAZ Senior is my favorite Amplifier. You have a very wide range of tone controls. Strats, Teles, and Les Pauls ALL sound wonderful plugged straight-in.....Never heard better tone... You should be very happy if you enjoy "hearing" your guitar.
Regarding which format to buy.....Man, I wouldn't want to carry around any 2x12 Combo anywhere. I bought Heads, but don't rule out a 1x12 Combo. I think if you bought a MAZ Senior Reverb with a Celestion Gold you would be happy for life with that set-up. You could also plug in a small 1x12 or 2x10 Extension Cabinet if you ever need more I really like Z's Reverb, so whether it's a Combo or a head....I would get Reverb. Mark

I have the reverb version and it is an unbelieveable tone sucker. I simply unplugged the two RCA jacks and let them hang out the back until I got my tech to take the whole tank out. Frankly my Holy Grail pedal does a far better job and it is ahead of the amp circuit. To me the stock tank's sound quality isn't there. I think a reverb should create some sense of mystery and depth. Instead it is more of "room sizing" reverb than a "depth of sound" reverb. I play my head through a 212 with a Swamp Thang and an old Eminence alnico with metal dust cap (sweet tone after years in a Hammond organ). I play Strats and Teles only. I use a bit of delay to round out the notes and bring out the woodiness, chime or twang, and then expect the reverb to have the range to walk me from the door of a cavern to the very deep middle where the sound is lush and full and all encompassing. From singing in the shower to hootin in the swamp, get me. So, if I was buying again, i would not get the reverb. Hope this helps.

I went through this same thing. I love my Maz Sr 2x12 reverb combo but... if I had it to do again I would buy a 1x12 or a head and cab only because it's a heavy sucka to lug. I wouldn't be without the reverb though - my amp sounds fantastic. I haven't heard a NR model but I can't imagine it sounding much better than mine and I always play with a touch of reverb.... and the 'verb on the Maz sounds great.

One more thing: people are always saying that non-reverb amps sound better... shorter signal path and all. I heard Bonnie Raitt uses reverb amps then turns the reverb all the way down (she doesn't use Z's but maybe someday she'll see the light ). I doubt it makes much of a difference. If you like reverb, buy an amp that has it JMHO

Pardon me but I think "incredible tone sucker" is a little exagerated. Just unplugging the pan won't change the rest of the circuitry. So if you think there's much difference between having the pan in or out of the circuit you might want to check again. I could be totally wrong! Perhaps the Doc has a comment?

"I simply unplugged the two RCA jacks and let them hang out the back until I got my tech to take the whole tank out."
With the reverb turned all the way down it doesn't affect the signal.
The NR models have more gain than the reverbs.

MAZ38NR 1-12 combo...it is the end-all for me. I have lots of other combo;s-heads-cabs but this will do anything the others will do and then some...easy or relatively easy to transport...Docs amps are not the lightest things going. But they are the best sounding amps I have had the oppertunity to play/own. If you insist on reverb, install a mod to eliminate it out of the circut. I have that option on my old fenders, and there really is a difference in tone/volume, its just the way it is.. I was all bent out of shape thinking that how can a 1-12 combo at 38 watts cover all that i need it to? the answer is: It just can....its that simple...I don;t try to figure out why/how and all that stuff....leave that to Doc, thats his area.....\ For amps that have a limited amount of controls, according to todays measure, these amps have an unlimited tonal pallete....I would guess that its because the controls that are there actually work... I have not played all the Z line, but as of now, I find the MAZ38 to be my Holy Grail....I would like to have a 18 though....and one of those not-yet-made 6L6 amps....and maybe a Ghia...or...or...or.... All of my other amps sit as understudies to the MAZ38...it is just the way it is...can;t argue with the TONE....

I had a reverb head which sounded great. But recently replaced a bad tube in a cusomters NR combo. Play tested it afterwards and found it more to my liking. Seemed a bit thicker and stronger with more drive. Both great amps, just depends on what you want, and if reverb is a must for you. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I had the same dilemma a year ago..........First of all, having heads and cabs to mix and match ,depending on the type of music you are playing, is the best way to go. What I mean is that it's just a lot of fun to have a variety of speakers to play thru and way more versatile. For me, owning different speakers has become way more important than buying stompboxes................took me a while to realize this.
..........and owning a z best type setup and a single 1x12 cab gets you covered for most live situations.
As far as reverb, after reading everyone's suggestions I came to the simple conclusion that I wanted it all. A shorter signal path with NR and more gain, and I wanted reverb for my SRV "Lenny" type tones...............my next question was whether there was an outboard verb that would make me as happy as the Z verb. For me the answer was the roommate by trex. (But, there are certainly other choices as well)
Looking back, I am so happy I created a situation where I have so much versatility and can pretty much cover any playing situation.....
Now I have to just shut up and play!
