I'm wondering if you fiddle with amp settings during a gig (like switch from clean to dirty between songs) or you set it and forget it? If I put my master at like 2:00 and adjust the volume knob for my level, the clean sound is just so sweet... but when I want a little dirt, I need to tweak. I use a Keeley modded ts9 when I need more dirt. I'm wondering if I should keep my amp set up for clean and do everything else with pedals? I was thinking of using my ts9 for the "a little dirt" setting and then having another OD pedal (suggestions? OCD?) for when I need more - like a ZZ Top kind of distotion - I don't do any high gain stuff.
What are your opinions?
Thank you Jay

I'm a set-n-forget guy.
I'll either: Play one of my strats with the Maz set squeeky clean (one of the best strat sounds EVER, IMO), & use pedals for dirt (currently a Keeley-modded Boss BD-2 or a M.I. Audio Crunch Box (wow.).
or
I'll play a tele straight in with the volume & master pegged, then use the guitar volume & tone for shades of gray...
Both are cool, just different.

Differs from room to room. Usually clean, often all the tone controls at 12:00, cut around 12-1, volume at about 9:00, master from 9:00-10:00, with multiple ODs for different levels or stacking of gain.
Oh, and yeah, the Crunchbox KILLS!

I leave the controls set, I'm amazed that it works for all situations so far, YMMV. I was a tweaker freak with most other amps. Every room and situation was different but with Z amps I just sit er down and play. I don't use heavy dist/od tones either. ZZ Top'ish OD tones at most. Lately I've been diming all of my tone controls, cut at around 7:00 to 8:00, master around 2:00 to 4:00 and volume around 11:00 to 12:00. Those setting get some hair on the notes with the guitar volume is dimed w/no pedals. Then I use an xotic RC for a boost and mild OD, I've an xotic BB for more OD and both pedals for my max OD. I use my guitar volume control for different levels of clean and overall volume. There are so many variables with this setup. I had to put a treble bleed circuit in my strat. Of course now I'n constantly tweaking the guitar volume control, once a tweaker always a tweaker.

Thank you for the replies. I've been fooling around with my amp constantly and I've come up with something I really like. I've decided to set up the amp for clean and use pedals for dirt... the cleans from this amp are just to nice to waste I have on order a Keeley modded BD-2 for my 'a little dirt' setting and I'll be using my Keeley TS-9 for more overdrive. Here are my settings: Treble at 11:00, mid 3:00, bass 3:00, master dimed, cut 2:00, reverb 9:00, volume to adjust level. I love it!
