-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello. This is my first post after hanging around and reading for a few weeks. I want to know what the real differences would be between a Dr Z 4 x 10 cabinet and his Z Best 2 x 12 cabinet. I would be playing through a Maz 38. I play Fender Strats and Tele's. Mostly playing the blues and a little classic rock. Will these 2 cabinets have a huge difference in tone and overall sound?

I've listened to these Cabs side-by-side for countless hours and love both of them. You may be surprised at how loud the 4x10 is....and...the Z-Best for that matter. Generally, the 4x10 is a tad "Quicker" if that makes any sense, and is GREAT for indoor, medium to larger clubs....the sound goes EVERYWHERE being an open-back. In fact, my kid's old instructor used one a couple of times and he actually turned the thing side-ways on-stage during the gig. The Z-Speakers are great and handle lots of power too.
The Z-Best 2x12 is a closed-back design and really thumps. I can't imagine EVER needing (or carrying) a 4x12. Your MAZ Senior Head will sit perfectly on-top for a pretty slender set-up on a small, crowded stage.
As a side note, I've loaded Tone-Tubby Alnico Hemp Cones in ALL of these Cabs. They cut the volume a bit and allow a little more out of the MAZ Juniors and Seniors.....but this Modification certainly isn't required.
To me, the ultimate LARGE stage set-up would be a MAZ Senior with a 4x10, and a MAZ Junior on a Z-Best.

Well, I have just purchased a beautiful MAZ 38 Sr Head. Its blonde and will arrive in 3 days I was told. I am still looking for some help as to what speaker cabinet to buy. The Z Best 2x12 or the 4x10 cabinet by Dr Z. Anyone with some first hand knowledge of both of these cabinets feel free to tell me all about them please.
Thanks

I totally dig my Z 2x10 cab with every amp!!!!!! One time I was at the local Z dealer and a guy wanted me to play while he listened to the 4x10 and the 2x10. The other guys liked the 4x10 but the 2x10 had a thicker midrange. That's why I ordered one with my Stang Ray head. Z himself commented that it was a 'special' combination. Special was his word.

To my ears, my Maz 38 (and my Boogie LSC) both sound better through a 1 x 12 Boogie open back cabinet that thru the Z best 2 x 12. I'm almost positive I' going to sell the Z and buy a Avater open back 2 x12; I just don't know what speakers to get.
