The MAZ Senior is my favorite Amplifier, and while I bought a couple of Heads, I've thought a lot about getting another Senior with Reverb in a 1x12 Combo with a Celestion Gold. Anyone try that set-up yet? The Senior is...or can be... very crisp and has lots of low-end. Even though I've always put in Tone Tubby Alnico Hemp Cones, I wonder how a Gold would work? Is it deep and smooth enough without being too brittle or bright? Thanks, Mark

I would "Think" it would be an amazing set up, If a player had only a Maz Sr 1x12 he would be just fine for ANY style or situation IMO, and a Gold in it would probably kill.

After reading through the Stang Ray and RX Extra Strength threads on this forum, I got all excited when I heard that they are making the combos fitted with a celestion gold. It got me thinking ... how would a gold sound in a 1x12 open back paired with the Maz 38? I'm weak ... I caved ... and I just got off the phone and ordered the cab with the gold. When it arrives I'll give a full review. Besides the ToneQuest review, here's another in case you have not come across it yet: professional.celestion.com/guitar/media/GuitarBuyerGoldReview.pdf

For m1911 or others -
Can you tell me how the Tone Tubby Alnico sounded with the Maz 38? Also, as compared to other speakers you may have tried with the Maz 38?
Are you using closed or open back cabs?
I was thinking about buying a TT for mine?
Thanks for your response.

The MAZ Senior sounds GREAT with all combinations of Tone Tubbies! I've connected Seniors to 1x12 Open-Backs, 2x10 Open-Back, 2x12 Z-Best Closed-Backs, and 4x10 Open-Backs. Smooth, yet plenty of clear tone. Tight lows with all the presence you would ever want too. Never flubby, farty, or ratty sounding when pushed either. I always get them in the original hemp "H1" version also....which are said to be the darkest sounding. Mark

I have a MAZ Senior 1x12 Combo with a Celestion Gold and just added a Weber beam block w/ 4" dome. I really like it.

markb,
What speaker did you have before? How would you compare the two? How similar/different is it to the Blue?

division17 - I have only had the gold in it. The beam blocker seemed to warm it up a little, it diffuses the sound somewhat, which I like, similar to adding duct tape to the center of the grill cloth without looking so ratty.

division17, I previously had a 50W weber blue alnico in my maz 38 and now I have a gold. I would say that they both are spectacular speakers in the maz. What I noticed is that the bottom is a little more controled with the gold, but, the blue is a little more compressed sounding. (which could be good in some cases) It's a matter of what you are looking for. The gold seems to lean a little to the ceramic side of things IMO. The blue seemed a little more articulate..............the gold "screams" with a humbucker. Even has a little cone cry.
Through my z 28, the blue was a tad bit spikey........that's ultimately why I went to try the gold. Turns out the z 28/gold sounds great with no spikes at all.
I think the comparison would be unfair between a Gold vs weber vs TTubbie as they are all outstanding........ My favorite so far is the gold and it seems to be the speaker I want to play with and break in for a long time to come. Seems to be the most versatile IMO. .................and the most $$$$$ !!!

I didn't realize you ordered the gold/maz 38 combo. For sure you are going to be experiencing an out of body experience when you get that amp. Personally I think it may make people who have sold maz 38's prior to the advent of the "gold" to now reconsider buying another 38 with a gold. I think its THAT good...............cannot say enough!

Nope ... didn't order the combo, I already have the head (reverb) and was previously playing through the Z-Best. I miss the 2x12 but I really can't wait for the Gold. I also have a Rickenbacker 330 on order (left handed) and think that the pairing of that guitar with the Maz and the Gold is going to be killer. Anyone here play a 330 or a six-string 360 through the Maz?

So now I'm curious as to how a Z-Best (2x12 Closed Back) would sound with a pair of Golds? 100 Watts, Alnico, Closed-Back for plenty of thump.....hmm?
