All i can say is....wow...my God...immaculate sound....cuts like butter....probably the best sound I've ever achieved out of any amplifier I've ever used. I have a Boogie that I thought could never be replaced- I was wrong. Dr Z has totally impressed me and I am definitely not ashamed of paying $1600 for 1x12 combo....now I just wanna use Dr Z amps, thought about buying a Twin Reverb for the clean tones, but hell, spend another 700 or 800 bucks and get another Dr Z....any recommendations on which amp to get next? I can't believe the sound I achieved last night, by the way, the music I play is obviously funk, and a lot of R&B, so it was perfect. Cranked out a couple Hendrix tunes last night as well....whats the next Z amp I should purchase?

Yeah I too had a Boogie (Nomad 55, which is in the basement collecting dust). Simply put, the 38sr just plain got THE tone for me.
As far as a second Z - you probably want to think about what you want to do with it. I think you should check out a Ghia. They got a vibe all their own.
Then there's the Z 28, and the RXeS, and the S-ray, and the 18jr, and the - should I continue?
and don't forget the cabs...

If you want clean tones, try a Stangray...

KT45 does great cleans too, plus some raunchy old school crunch if you crank it!

...with the master dimed and volume at 1/2 or less your Maz 38 should have plenty of clean depending on the cab you're pushing...not quite as much as a twin perehaps but enough that a Twin would be somewhat redundant...unless of course you don't want to turn knobs during a performance and or want a truly different voiced amp....in that case...nevermind

Hard to describe until you try it out.

Should I get a combo or head and 2 10s? Ive had combos all my life, but i want something with more power, and the head is the cheapest of all Z's....for the Carmen Ghia...what are your recommendations tjstrat?

I do like separates, head and cab. Easy to haul around and more speakers flexibilities,2x12,2x10,1x12,4x10 and many more.

I use either a Mesa 2x12 cab for tighter stages, or the Z Best when I can get some seperation and distance from the amp. Looking halfheartedly for a 1x12 for even smaller places, but that's not a priority. I like the idea of the head cab seperation not just because of being able to use an optimal cab size for the venue, but also because I seperate the head physically to avoid physical shock and wear and tear on the tubes. I put it on a chair or the floor next to the speaker and keep drinks faaaaaaar away from it. For some reason, if you can get a little distance, the speakers side by side seem to sound bigger to me than upright on top of each other. It may be that vertically they represent a virtual 1x12 to my ears, or I may be going into Eric Johnson tone Oz on this point. The Ghia may have less power than you'd like for a pristine clean (it's not a Polytone or anything), but at 9:00 it's too loud and clean for most of my band's situations aside from outdoor festival work. I was a Mesa user for MANY years (LOVED my Mark III combo). The Dr Zs were a revelation to me. I'm like you, funkyjazz: I may never play another brand of amp ever again, unless they start falling from the sky like Skittles. Someone here has a signature of "So many Zs, so little time", and it's truer than they think. Incidentally, fj, look at this link if you want: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=147581 It's not Z related recording, but it IS sort of funky '70s style fusion, with a Scofield cover in the mix. It was recorded with my old Mark III and a variety of toys... A Roland GR33 for the synth stuff that the keyboard player couldn't cover, the Jan Hammer type leads and string washes.

I agree the Ghia ia awesome!
I think the clean on the Ghia is great. I only had a few gigs where it didn't have enough headroom.

I get a great Fender style tone from my Maz38NR with the following setting.
Vol 10:00 (low input), Master full, Treble 12:00, Mids 9:00, Bass10:00 and Cut pretty low.
I just love this amp.Congrats on a great amp.

I'm using a Maz38 for clean and a Z28 for the dirt/rock sounds. The Z28 is totally different from the Maz38 - which is very cool. Actually thinking about getting a Tonebone VT to switch between the two.
