I have been a proud and very satisfied owner of a Z-28 2-10” combo for nearly three years now. I’ve recently been looking at a Maz-38 Senior combo with 2-12” Celestion Blues that’s been for sale at a local music store for the last month of so. The amp has an “M” prefix serial number, which I believe dates it to 2002.
Looking at the Dr. Z Website, I read that that the MAZ-38 was upgraded at some point – to “include additional front-end gain (for a bit more drive at lower volumes), a larger output transformer for a wider bandwidth with clear lows and a less compressed sound. By incorporating the phase inverter design from the MAZ 18 Jr, the MAZ 38 Sr. now uses no negative feedback , which provides "more, more, more..." More "thickness" more harmonic content, and more sustain. We have also replaced the presence control with the extremely useful "Cut" control, another innovation of the MAZ 18 Jr. So the child reshaped the father, and the MAZ 38 Senior is the result” (Dr. Z, 2006). When did this change occur?
Also, I haven’t seen too many used Maz-38 Seniors for sale and am curious as to what is a fair price to pay for a 2002 model. The store is asking $2200, which I think may be a bit much – given what I can buy a new one for (there are no Dr. Z dealers in my area). This particular combo also has a hardwood front panel.
Any information is appreciated.
Merry Christmas!
Regards,
Paul

As a follow-up to my question, I want to clarify that this amp is also a reverb model.
Thanks!

I can't say when the output transformer was switched to a larger version, or when the 'Cut' control replaced 'Presence', but I can offer possible guidance.
If the amp you're looking at has 'Cut', then it should be the "improved" version. Further, some of the later combos will have a cooling fan for the transformer.
And as far as the price you quoted - I think it's too high, even for a woody.
But, I strongly recommend a Maz - they're so versatile.

I just bought a second hand Maz Sr 38 head and matching ZBest 2x12 cab for $1500. Serial number is O, so its newer than that one. I'd say its pretty overpriced...

I went with head / cab on the MAZ so I'd have more flexibility. It really doesn't matter if a dealer is in your area or not. If you liked the tone, you can always order from anyone of the Z dealers. He ships to them, they test it and sign the warranty card then ship it to you.
I like the SR. It does have a ton of tone and power.
The packaging is unbelievalbe. I had my Sr shipped. no issues.
