Good day all,
I went to Lauzon Music store in Ottawa (Canada) with the intent on getting a Dr. Z amp. I narrowed it down to a MAZ 18 Jr, MAZ 38 Sr, and the Stang Ray. I played through all three for quite some time and the MAZ 38 Sr. won for me by quite a bit. It's intersesting because I was much more hyped about the Stang Ray prior to entering the store (based on articles, reviews, sound samples, etc.).
I got the MAZ 38 Sr head (with reverb). I play a lot of funk and I felt that this amp was much better suited for this style than the Jr. With respect to the Stang Ray, I found the 38 more versatile and believe it or not ... more Voxish than the Stang. This surprises me because the Stang was supposedly built based on Brad Paisley's '63 Vox AC-30/4 (pre-top boost model). Another thing that surprises me is that I found the Stang too loud to handle (30 watts), but the MAZ Sr is 38 watts ... strange eh?
Anyway, I look very forward to participating in this forum.

The Maz is more versatile there's no doubt but if you like what the Ray does then that's what you have to have. I have both so I know.

Welcome 17!. I also have both, 2x12 combos. I found that the Maz 38 does cover more bases in terms of doing the rock thing a little bit better. The Stang for me has that sound I am looking for for both Country and Blues in terms of clean headroom and that certain high end sparkle. The Maz though breaks up quicker and has a bit of sag which is also great for Blues. I love them both, your guitar, pu's, pedals, playing style, etc. all dictate your sound. They are both killer, I bought my StingRay(#14) from Dave at Lauzons as I live in Edmonton. They seem to be a great shop with good folks, I've purchased a few things on the phone with Dave. Take care I know you are going to love your new Maz 38!!
