Stevie Ray all day long!! Everyone plays different. What one guy does may not work for the next. Amp settings, guitar, pickups, pedals, playing style etc. The main thing is that the Maz 38 can give you that sound easily but it's up to you to find it. Sounds like an episode from Kung Fu

A lot of SRV tone is sheer volume. Listen to a dimed non-master volume Fender amp with a good Strat and you'll hear it. There is a lot of limiting and compression in his sound and that's how it's done. This is one reason why I don't understand people who want a noncompressing amp or overdrive pedal. It's part of "the sound".

I've got a MAZ 38 NR and a MAZ 18 NR. Both will get the "SRV-ish" sound, especially with the mids cut a little and the master maxed. Turn the bass all the way off, then raise it just a little until the low "E" has that "thwack". Too much bass and it gets too thick. Here's a real good SRV sounding trick: use both a SR and a JR at the same time (an Axess Electronics BS2 is great for this). Set the JR to break up, and the SR for clarity. That's basically what SRV was doing with his multi-amp setup- some amps for a little earlier breakup (Vibroverb) and some for clarity and power (like the Dumble). If you want to hear a master player get a great SRV-ish sound with just one MAZ 38, check out "I Thought I Heard The Devil" from John Mayall's Stories CD. Absolutely killer. Check out a clip of it on the Dr. Z amps MAZ 38 web page.

Thanks, Dock66. I guess I should have also said (for those who don't already know) that the geetar master on that recording is our very own BW, Buddy Whittington.

I cant speak for a Maz 38, but I have a ghia 2x10. I just got a hold of a Sparkle Drive recently and wow, with a mexi-strat (with the pickguard assembly from my custom shop Robert Cray) through it and straight into the amp just NAILS SRV tone (granted I play with heavy strings and a HEAVY pick attack). Its the SRV tone i could never quite acheive with a Tubescreamer and my Twin Reverb. I hope the Maz 38 can do the same as I think thats my next Z! Jason

Everything I ever saw or read Stevie used one Tube screamer and a wah, sometimes two wah's taped together. And no one ever mentions his use of Marshalls, near the end he had Marshalls on Stage, check out his last Austin City Limits and you'll see a very alert, sober Stevie playing through a Marshall as well as others.
RIP SRV

RIP SRV I remember seeing him live and he had a complete pedalborad set up with lots of toys on it. I seem to recall (all be it a bit fuzzy, pun intended) a Fuzz face on the floor. But I do recall he use to buy these and gut them for the Cesar Diaz modded Circuit he was credited with favoring (I think that became the Diaz Texas Square Face) Here I found a link with a brief description; www.pedalspluseffectswarehouse.com/Diaz_s/87.htm[glow=limegreen,2,300]-J-[/glow]

I'd never heard abou him using two wa-was at the same time. I did that once in high school with two Vox crybabys. It is the most killing wah sound you ever heard. I plugged them together, turned them both on and rocked them with a piece of 1x8 pine. Fantastic! I always wanted to have someone put two together like that and make it switchable but never pursued it. I could probably build and manufacture such a pedal, get rich from all you free spending guitar players, have all kinds of hot babes after me and retire in Hawaii. Hey, it could happen!

Played a Maz Sr with a Z 4X10 cab. OMG!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S where it's at guys. What a sound, lot's of low end, sweet mids and wonderful detail in the high mids and highs. It's the next cab I'm buying fo' sho'. SRV was in there, definitely, but the Maz Sr can do a lot more than just that. Cranked thru a Z-Best cab it can make a lot of Plexi's whimper in the corner!

Nice clips....as well as the many others on your Sounclick page. Do you do session work down there in Nashville? Thanks for sharing. Mark Thanks, Mark. Yeah, I dabble a bit with session work. Not nearly enough, though...espeically this time of year. Things pretty much shut down for touring & studio stuff for the majority of the music industry here in town. The exceptions being some of the major acts that do some winter touring. On the flip side, record labels are usually quite busy cutting recods and getting new artists ready for the coming year. Glad you liked the clips. I'll be doing some new ones in the coming days. J

How does the two wah set up work??

How does the two wah set up work?? "Double your pleasure, double your fun..." 2 Wahs in series like any 2 pedals in a signal chain, only link the actuators (wah rocker) together (as Billyguitar noted - a piece of wood or other material) so the wahs are acting as one. Tried it once, very cool, but couldn't get it to work consistently so the concept never left the house.

Here's a cool site on SRV's equipment over the years. It looks like he used a lot of different types of equipment, but that SRV sound always came through. www26.brinkster.com/jakapa/srv/faq/faq5.htm#531I agree that the Maz's do a good job getting you into the neighborhood of the SRV sound.
