Hi Maz Sr. 38 users & Z-forum members -
I apologize if this issue has been discussed in prior threads. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between the Maz Sr. 38 Studio Lead vs. the Maz Sr. 38? Is the Studio Lead just an older version before the Maz Sr. 38 was modified with some of the Maz Jr. changes? BTW, what year did the Maz Jr. mods get made on the Maz Sr? Is the Studio Lead as versatile as the Maz 38 Sr? Would the Studio Lead make a good first choice for a Z or should I wait on a Maz Sr. 38. Thanks for your help.
Looking for that first Z....

Senior has a little more clean headroom, 'cut' vs. presence control, no pull mid boost, but is still very similar to the original MAZ 38. I have a 1X12 studio deluxe combo, and after taking it around the world a coupla times, still use it a LOT for local gigs. Its the one that got me hooked in the first place. That said, I LOVE the Senior, Ghia, original RX and as of late the KT45. Check out tele62 and rcrecelius' posts on the Route 66 and KT45, you really can't go wrong on ANY of 'em with just a little investigation....

I can't compare the Maz 38 Sr to the Studio Lead, because the Studio Lead is the only one I've had the opportunity to play. Mine has reverb AND an effects loop, which is a combination not available on stock Maz 38s (for an additional fee you can get both, I think). I use mine with pedals and a little bite with the volume/master volume settings and it's a great amp to start your Z journey with if you have a line on one.
That said, my Ghia gets most of the work right now. But it's an absolutely amazing amp.

Thanks BW, Tjstrat for the info.
The Maz 38 Studio Lead was sold before I could take action which I guess is the nature of the Z. In the meantime, however, I managed to purchase a Carmen Ghia. It wasn't on the radar as my first choice but man does it sound great. That tone control is just fabulous. Even the wife commented on how good it sounded, although, now she tells me to turn it down. Surprisingly loud little sucker. All I have to run it through right now is a 90w Mesa cab. Much to my wife's chagrin, I may have to get another cab. Odd thing when I opened the shipping box and looked at the tube sheet inside the cab it's for a Z-28. The seller said he didn't switch out the Z-28 for a CG although he may not be the original owner. Oh well, I'll just enjoy the beautiful tone of the Ghia for now...
Who's next...KT-45, Maz 38, RXES
Side note: I was at a Guitar Center recently and they had a used RXES for sale with a price tag of $1,999...I told the sales dude that they list for $1549.00 brand new...

I run a Jauernig Luxury Drive, a Clark Gainster, and a Fulltone OCD into the Ghia and get as brutal a distortion or as slick an uptown blues tone as you could ever want with my Ghia. And in the clubs and rooms I play, even on festival stages, it totally kills. Once you take it out a few times and put some distortion on it you'll be stunned. Volume at 10 o clock, tone between 11 and 2, and that OCD with the gain between 12:00 and 3:00 and you will BE STUNNED!

Hey tjstrat -
I've got an OCD, how do you have the controls on the OCD set? Do you leave the tone control at 12 on the OCD?
Thanks.

The volume is between 9 and 12 o'clock, gain between 12 and 3, and the tone often straight up, sometimes a little to the left. Depends on the room, my distance from the cab, and the volume I have the Ghia set at, seldom past 9 o'clock or so. The OCD cleans up very nicely with your volume controls with the Ghia too. You may not even want to fiddle with the medium gain box.
