hey everyone, this is my first post here
i have a chance to get a used maz 38 sr 1x12 combo pretty soon for a good price. i've done alot of research on this amp, and it sounds like it might be what i'm looking for, but i wanted to hear from some of you guys. i play in an alt-rock band, and use alot of cleans and light overdriven tones, and for anything heavier plan to use pedals. the problem is, i dont have a chance to play the amp before i buy it, so i've only been able to go by the soundclips i've, which seem to show that this is what i'm looking for. basically i'm just wanting to hear from you guys about if the soundclips (especially the ones on the dr z site) are representative of what the amp sounds like live. also, do you think i would be wiser to wait and try to find a head/cab or 2x12 combo as opposed to the 1x12? or do you think the 1x12 would be fine for small/medium sized clubs (miked most of the time)? or would you suggest another amp? thanks.

This amp will satisfy you. I think everyone here would tell you the same. Don't even fret about it. You'd have to spend double to get another brand's amp that is even in the same ballpark. You will not be disappointed. You may ultimately decide that this particular model is not the one you want but you really can't tell that until you've spent some time with any good amp. rest easy our new friend!

The MAZ are amps the ultimate "right down the middle" amp. You can get great cleans, and also excellent drive tones. I've got a ton of clips on my Sound Clip page, all with either a MAZ 18 or 38. Recorded, the two amps are pretty similar. Live, the 18 is a little more agressive and doesn't have as huge a bottom as the 38. A 38 1 12" will be plenty loud for clubs and even louder stuff. www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=465770JC

Ditto to what Jayson and Billy said above...
wonderful amp in any combination (1x12, 2x10, 2x12, or head/ cab) AND between tube and speaker swaps you can really fine tune any of the DR Z's even closer to what your looking for...
AND all the clips are good representations of the amp so if you like them then your heading in the right direction BUT.... It sounds WAY better live and to really appreciate a DR Z amp you've gotta PLAY it LIVE with a BAND to really get the most out of it..... just gets better and it probably won't be your last like billy said so hold on to your visa card cause the ZGAS hits hard.... n' packs a wallop! ;D

I echo every word of the two Jason's and Billy. I have only used my Maz 38 at rehearsals and it sounds simply awesome, can't wait to open her up at an outdoor gig.

Welcome Mrhat. This is a great forum as are all of the Z amps. I agree with all that's been said. A 1x12 is nice and moves plenty of air and will cut through the mix easily. If you want a different sound you can add a single 12 cab to the 1x12 combo rig and have choices when you gig or jam. You can view the Z gallery for ideas. You can't go wrong starting with a maz 38 1x12 combo. Hope the maz sr it works out for you! It's a great choice.
