Hi there everybody. Maybe one of y'all can help me out.
I've got a 38 Sr. NR with a Z-Best 2-12. I bought it used a couple of months ago. It sounded great with my Callaham "S" right out of the box. It took me a little time, but now I've sussed out the settings for my PRS McCarty as well. (BTW, it's a great amp for that guitar.). Now I feel totally at home with either of these very different guitars when I'm playing throuh the 38.
Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a nice tele to round out my stable. So I borowed a freinds made-in-Japan tele to try out. He's a very experiened player and says that it's got a classic tele sound and feel. I put a new set of 10's on it. But for the life of me I could not get that thing to sound good. I kinda liked the neck pick-up by itself. But even that was inferior to the neck pickup on the Callaham. I was playing with some freinds at the time and as soon as I switched to the PRS everyone mentioned how much better I sounded/played.
So I thouht I might give it one more chance before I say goodby to the Tele idea. Can anyone out there suggest amp settings on the 38 that might change my mind?
Thanks,
Frank

Hi S.F. Franky, I would try out another Tele first before dumping the idea. I am not surprised that you are not liking the MIJ tele when you have a Callaham 'S' guitar and a PRS McCarty you are comparing it against. I would see if you can find another tele to try out perhaps with similar quality hardware so that you have a more fair comparison. The pickups on the MIJ guitars are not my favourite. When running my tele I sometimes need to turn the treble down a bit depending on the room but most of the time it stays the same between my tele and my strat. It also might not be 'your' sound. As much as I love my tele I definitely more of a Strat guy.

I'd say you're really trying to compare apples to oranges. About 10 or 12 years ago I took my amp into a store that had about 10 different Teles. It came down to a Japanese all rosewood Tele and an American Standard. The Japanese Tele squealed like crazy so I bought the American. Ultimately I didn't like the American and sold it. later I bought a '52 reissue and the pickups were much better in it. Try a different Tele and turn the cut and treble way down and then raise them up 'til you hear what you like. I like my mid at about 2:00 to 3:00.

Have you used a tele before? The two guitars you list are a little different in approach. I guess it also depends on your technique. I dont think you can really give a tele to someone and have them come off sounding good right away. To me teles are all about hard attack either with fingers or pick. What the Maz gives me is jangle and more snap, the bassman I have is more thud. If you play some of the classic tele music you will get a sense of how to use the guitar to its best. Walking bass chicken picking etc. Check out Arlen Roth's book. I hope I have not insulted you, I just think the tele requires a completely different approach. The strat and PRS are much easier to sound good on. The Maz will work amazingly with a tele. I use a heavily modified MIJ jd tele with antiquity pu's, I have yet to find better. Only the wood and body finish is original but it always has been an exceptional guitar. The stock Japan pickups were horrible. My suggestion would be heavy pick light mute bridge pickup full open. I'm with Rob, also, if you'll look at my post in the Maz Sr gallery it clearly shows my prefered Tele sttings, use the Lo imput. Of course it depends on WHAT tele tone you want to hear, Don Nichols or Roy B, Tom Petty or Brent Mason, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Buck Owens...LOL ya gat the drift, The tone I pulled with that setting would be considered as fairly clean but took to pedals very well for all shades of dirty.
Good Luck.

Don't worry Rob. No offense taken. I actually got the thing to sound pretty good in the last couple of days. But using a tweed deluxe clone (Clark Beaufort), not the Z.
On the weekends I'm using the MAZ. But during the week I'm in a small apartment. So I usually play through either the Beaufort or a little '68 Princeton reverb. The Beaufort's naturally dark tone really seems to compliment the tele's inherent brightness.
So far I've only spent one evening with the MAZ/tele combo. Since I was playing at a party at the time, I decided not to fight it and simply switched guitars. When I posted, I was looking for some advice - like settings that would get me in the neighborhood quickly and then I could take it from there.
Tonewise I'd say my favorite tele tones would be Keith Richards on one side and the teles featured on Hank III's "Risin' Outlaw" on the other. The two example's I could give you is "It Means a Lot" on Keith's "Talk is Cheap" and "What did love ever do to You" on Hanks "Risin' Outlaw"
I've played plenty of Keith's 5 string "G" stuff in my past. But Honkytonk? Not so much. However, in the past few years I've developed a taste for Bakersfield based country. I found Hank III first, then Wayne Hancock and then the Derailers. All of a sudden I realized I liked Honky Tonk, but not the stuff I heard on county radio. (no offense intended.) Hence my interest in acquiring a nice tele and why I borrowed my friend's guitar. I figured if I liked it, I could hunt down something better for myself.
Of course, I just might not take to them. In that case, I'll order me a nice hardtail Strat instead.
BTW, Thanks to all of you who responded. I have very little experience with Zs. I'm not a PRO in any sense of the word and I ain't rich. So I don't have the necessity or the luxury of spending hours every day shaping my tone. I'm grateful for any and all shortcuts you can send my way.
And Remember - I won't take offense, I'll take notes ;-)
Thanks for the help, Frank
