Hello This is my first post on the Dr.Z message board. I bought my Z back in December and she just keeps giving! I really like vintage fuzz, but my fuzz face copy sounds very woofy/muddy through the Z, with very little cut. I am using a mid line Tex Mex Strat, and I have tried to compensate with the eq and just can't dial in anything satisfactory. Does anyone use or recommend a vintage sounding box that will work well with my amp? Thanks.

First Welcome Tarkus. You'll find loads of great info in the Effects section. And others here. I've a MAZ Sr and really like the Exotic BB Boost. IMO it behaves like a tube amp cranked. It also cleans up nicely when the gain is turned down. What I like the most about the pedal are the treble and bass controls. Alas there are so many different flavors and opinions out there. Keep an open wallet er I mean mind and have fun checking out the tons of info on this forum and great forumites.

Welcome Tarkus,
I haven't used it in a while but I have a very early Prescription electronics "experience" fuzz pedal... it's supposed to be one of the best and It sounds really good though Z's... you can make it sound like your speakers are gonna explode through the cab... Hendrix....
I haven't played it in a while but you got me thinking and tomorrow I'm gonna play it through my MAZ SR and my STINGRAY (haven't tried anything like that with the RAY so should be interesting..) let ya know... there are SO many good pedals out there now so you should be able to find a great sounding one...

I think the FullTone 69' Fuzz is EXTREMELY nice through a MAZ Senior.....plenty of adjustment to go from an almost smooth overdrive fuzz to a whole lot more if you want. Check it out. Mark

I have been considering Fulltone fuzzes for some time now....I REALLY like the later Hendrix Experience stuff like on Live at the BBC with Lulu! When he nails that open E chord on the Hey Joe intro the amps sound like they are going to cave in on themselves! I'm not sure, but by late 69 he might have been using silicon equipped fuzzes. I've also been looking into Durham's Crazy Horse pedal which to my ears, sounded pretty close to the Rust never Sleeps album by my other guitar hero.

Hey Tarkus, I've tried some Fuzz Face copies with my MAZ 38 NR and they didn't work right for me - to muddy sounding. Checked out a lot of other fuzz pedals and ended up with a PedalworX McFuzz. Phantastic great sounding pedal - it can go from almost clean boost over mid gain overdrive to fully cranked fuzz heaven (that's how I'm using it ;D ). It never gets muddy - thanx to it's very effective tone control. I also like it a lot for slide playing. Bob McBroom doesn't make 'em anymore (he's takin' a break from the pedal thang). My (custom) McFuzz is probably the last one he made... But maybe you can find it used somewhere. Here's a link to pedalgeek, they still have it - and also some sound samples: www.pedalgeek.com/cgi-bin/new_shop.cgi?config=&uid=VKXpvAAA1151617907&command=link--pmfh

Yeah, I'm in total ageement about typical fuzz face clones being too muddy with the Maz. I have one of the decent Dunlop Fuzz Faces. Analog man talks a bit about these particular models from about 6 years ago in his SunFace section. The Dunlop sounds pretty good at lower volumes but just looses definition and cut when my amp starts cooking.

I actually didn't like the Fulltone 69 with the maz. Does anyone have any experience w/ the Z-Vex fuzz factory?

The Fuzz Factory is meant to be used with a clean sounding amp. I use it with my MAZ Sr. and it works well. It's not a smooth sounding pedal but you'll have no trouble cutting through the mix. I think most people find it somewhat harsh when demoing it but when you put it in a live situation it really shines. You'll find the harshness is gone and it really comes out front well. The range of the Fuzz Factory is very broad and it takes a while to tweak. There is a website somewhere that has about fifty Fuzz Factory settings. Watch out, unity on the volume knob is at about 9:00.

I just tried my MJM Silicon London Fuzz II with my Maz38Sr NR 212 combo and it rocks. Great Jimi/EJ tones. The MJM sounded better through the Maz compared to the RXES. In fact all my pedals sounded better through this amp. It has the Weber 50 watt Alnico Bluedog/Silverbell combination. Got a gig tonight so I will post a final report soon. ;D If you want a fuzz for the Maz38Sr, definitely check out the MJM London Fuzz. I am partial to the Silicon version but the Germanium sounds great as well.

Hi tarkus, i agree with aruntang, The MJM london is a killer fuzz in either the germ, or silicon versions. Especially if your looking for a super authentic fuzzface. All of Michaels pedals seem to quite strictly follow the originals circuit topology, and component choices, he just matches and sources out the components REALLY well! I own a handfull of his stuff and find in each case that they're probably one of, if not the, most accurate reproductions availible. I think in only one case does he add something that wasnt on the original, and thats a high/low range switch on his range master clone. He doesnt really get inovative so to speak, but its kinda cool to see someone really get the oldies right. As far as a fuzz of a different color, i dig Lovepedals Karl. I found it to be a super "usable" fuzz. It almost behaves more like a distortion until you max it out, but different. Very cool and unique take on a fuzz, it has a lot less of the high end roll-off that you traditionaly get with a fuzzface, when the guitar volume is maxed.
