Hey guys, seriously can you help me. I have $2000 and I need an amp. I love Trey Anastasio's tone with his sustain and overdrive. I was wondering what amp most resembles a Fender Deluxe Reverb. And how a Maz 38 Sr. sounds with a 1-12 rather than 2-10's.
Thanks, Gavin

A 1-12 sounds great. Never a/b'd aaginst a 2 x 10. I don't think the practical differences are much. If you want Trey tone, the more important part of the equation is the compressor, the o/d pedal, the guitar and then the amp, in that order.

The 1x12 is a bigger burger. The 2x10 has more flavor.

I'm assuming you have no way to hear a Maz in person. That being said, go to your local Guitar Center and try to compare a Blues DeVille with 1 or 2 twelves to a Blues DeVille 4x10. This will give you some idea of the differences in speaker size. GC usually has both of these in stock.

Not to disagree, because you make a good point when comparing the same amp through different speaker configurations. But speaking of burgers, a Fender DeVille is a Krystal and the MAZ amps are like the black angus "thickburgers" at Hardees....Mmmm Seriously, though... If you dig the "classic" Fender tone, you should love the MAZ for this reason: A lot of guys that grew up playing Fender amps (like myself) usually find "home" with the MAZ amps. They are kind of like that sound, but with some UK thrown in. Kind of like if a Super Reverb had a baby with a Vox AC30, if that makes sense...But at the same time, they weren't quite sure if the father was the AC30 or a Plexi... The 2 10's are agressive & snotty. Especially the stock-type Z speakers. I love them. And don't think they are shy in terms of bottom end, either. On the other hand, through 12's my MAZ amps sound a bit "bigger" and more refined, depending on what type of 12's you use. Is that a safe enough answer for you?? ;D JC

My intent is only to demonstrate the differences between 12" and 10" speakers. The Blues DeVille in both configurations is commonly found in many music stores. This is an easy, accessible way to hear the differences between the two speaker sizes. Even this test presents problems, because I don't think the 12" and 10" speakers in the DeVille are the same model. This is also a factor when comparing a Maz with the typical Celestion 12" speakers as opposed to a Maz with the Doctor's 10" Eminence speakers. It does however, demonstrate general differences between the two sizes. Although we all can describe what we hear to other players, the only true test is hearing it for yourself. This is especially true with something as subjective as speaker size.

I reckon I'm a cab-a-holic, as I've got WAY too many than I need...
But in response to your query - I've got a Maz38 that I run into four different cabs, depending on the sound I want, the venue, and miking vs. not. So, I'll list the combinations and what I hear from each..
maz + Z-Best (2X12 stock) - Most fender-like tone to me. Lots of "fat-tone". I use this in a medium sized venue, no mikes. Muy heavy though. But UNBELIEVABLE sound.
maz + Z open back (2X12 stock) - More high end comes through, with less punch. I use this on the road exclusively (works well miked) - and you never know what kind of gig you're in for, so this one is an all-around combination.
maz + Z open back (2X10 stock) - VOX all the way... got that nasally honk. I use this if I want that straight Brit sound (sometimes run this in combination with the Z-Best)
maz + Weber cab (1X12 Blue Dog - alnico 50 watt) - sound somewhere between the Z-Best and 2X12 open back- I use this on the gigs around Nashville where it's miked and stage time is limited.
Hope that helps...
