Sometimes my mind comes up with weird stuff.
Has anyone ever tried mismatching output tubes on a Maz 38? Two of one brand and two of another? I understand that these amps use side by side pairs instead the way other 4 tube amps do. Probably not a good idea but inquiring mind wants to know.

I had a fairly lengthy phone talk with the DOC about that very issue and my 38. I had a small pile of NOS rca's, i like in some other amps and wanted to try to warm up the tone a bit from the fairly aggressive JJ's. It was O.K. to put them in, But if i recall he said i might get some background noise as they try to bias themselves in. I did not get any undue or scary noises and in fact they are still in there, and a bit warmer, and cleaner. The point is i guess that they were NOT matched, that it would be the same for different manufacturers. He did say tho that it is better to have them matched, so the power section is balanced. Thats the best of my recollection of that convo.

I *think* that the only amps that you can mismatch - effectively - are the Mazerati and RxES, as they don't require a matched quad - although I'm sure Myles can chime in and verify.
But the others may require a true matched quad to sound "right"
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Hope this helps.

Use a matched quad. This amp does not have a split bias as the RxES and Mazerati. Those amp have pairs on each side. This is not the same with the MAZ Sr.
