do I plug the z-best cab into the 4 ohm output and the Maz-38's speaker into the 8 ohm output or do I plug both into the 4 ohm output with a Y-cable? and what would be the difference? thanks for your help
There is no such thing as a stupid question: just stupid people who ask questions.

Y cord into 4 ohm tap. That would be the correct impedance match. the amp will sound best that way.

Confirmed by the only Z-natic! Now he's got to find a Y cord to do it. What thread was that in, in case he wants to look that up?

I contacted Dr. Z directly and I was told to disconnect the combo speaker and just use the extension cabinet only. It is not good to have the combo speaker at 8 ohms plugged in and the cabinet at 4 ohms. don't ask me why. and I did pick up the Y cable at the local electronics store, Orvac Electronics, for $2.90. way less than $33.00 mentioned above.

My bad, I assumed the Z-best cab was 8 ohms. I didn't understand that it was 4 ohms from your question. That Y cable is probably not for speaker output but headphones or something like that. I wouldn't use it for speakers unless you're sure that's what it's for.

Hi Samuelson, To answer your question about running your amp at to low of impedance . . . There is math to back all of this up, I'll spare you the details unless you are curious If you plug 2 8 ohm speakers (wired in parallel) into your amp it will think the load is actually 4 ohms. If you use two 4 ohm speakers will amp will see 2 ohms (I am rounding the numbers because it is actually a bit more than 2). The lower the impedance the lower the resistance and the more work you amp tries to do. When you run a 4ohm amp at 2 ohms eventually it will kill the amp due to over work. Its trying to put out more power than it is designed to do. The bad part is that you can get away with it for a "period of time" without any obvious ill affects. But eventually the amp will start acting up or fail. The same situation is true of using the wrong cable for different applications. I've run across people who use instrument cables for speaker cables or wire up their 4 x 12 cab wrong way and tell me it "sounds fine, whats the problem". Its just a matter of time. I've seen some links to low cost Y adapters that are made for signal level sources and not for speaker cables. The same is true for these. They will probably work "just fine" but will either compromise your sound to some degree or create other problems down the road. The most immediate problem I see is that all of these are molded plastic junk. A couple of good yanks on them and they will fail. So what is the true cost of a cable? The first time it fails at a gig, or an audition or in the studio it doesn't matter how cheap it was, it cost too much because you can't get that second chance back. Nobody cares that your equipment failed, they just care that you didn't perform. enough for now . . . Todd

Ditto, todd Why I wanted YOU to make the Y cable and not me.... I want the very best/ safest way to run my amps...put alot of money into equipment ( I've blown a transformer on an amp before because of a plastic connector failed on a cabinet, that plastic connector put my main amp down for months and cost me more than $300.00 total to fix...very expensive KENDRICK transformer...) so whats 30 bucks for a cord that would probably last you for 10-20 years.. ( I've got some GOOD speaker cables that are still going strong after 15 years...they were a little more but these that I'm buying from todd are the first ones I've bought since I bought those) Jason

Hey guys, One of the members here reported a sound difference when he switch from the y cable that is made from headphones or signal wire to the speaker cable made Y cable. Anyone else notice anything?? Todd
