Hi Jason, I pm'd you about this too. I recently tried a Maz38 and was blown away. I am now unsure about my RXES. What are your thoughts on the differences between the two? Which would you choose if you had to pick between the two? I am thinking about returning the RXES and buying a Maz38 based on what I heard. I guess I can't go wrong either way. Thanks for your time. Also what are your thoughts on the head/cab versus the combo? I will respect anyone elses opinions on this as well.

I can't comment of the RxES, but if you do decide to go for the Maz 38, definitely go with a head and cab. I'm selling my Maz 38 2x12 combo and replacing it with a head and cab because the combo is just too bulky and awkward to cart around, especially since my studio is upstairs.

Hi Arun, If I had to choose between the RX ES and the MAZ 38... I go with the Maz 38... It can just do so much and covers the bases pretty well as you heard when you tried one out... and to really get the full effect you've got o gig with it/ play it with the full band... saying that you've also got to realize I LOVE THE PRESCRIPTION... it's a great amp!! I also LOVE THE STINGRAY... but if I had to only have ONE amp it'd be the MAZ 38... hands down! as BW or Bluzsteel might say... it's a "purty good un" ;D now if you asked me what the second amp would be if I could only have two DR Z's..... thats MY delemna right now... Maz 38 w/ stingray or the RX? I'm just gonna have to play em and see which 2 works for me the best.... also trying to figure which cabs / speaker go best with each.... I would like to just use a 2 amp rig... but which 2? i'll probably be playing the Maz 38 and the Stingray.... I been playing the Stingray with the Ghia ever since I got the Stingray... really cool two amp combo.... clean/ dirty.... then again the Stingray with the RX would be cool? I just can't decide on which two.... I'll just play a different pair every time we play... I personally like the head/ cab combo for versatility... portability.... I could even use my Maz 38 head with my 1x12 Z cab... which if I run a three amp set up is what I think I'll use for one of the amps... stingray, maz 38 and RX... then just switch between em... on second thought Arun... keep the RX ES AND get a Maz 38.... that would be Myles solution... just get em all... but overall I'd have to go w/ Maz 38 ....MHO I hope it helps... probably doesn't... it's HARD to get rid of one! Even if your gonna get another one... Jason

I haven't played an RXES, only heard through sound clips, but it definitely sounds like its geared towards an edgier rock sound. But for pure tone and flexibility I agree with jgleaton and say the MAZ 38 is the one. I tend to like an amp with a good "clean" sound, and use pedals for drive, compression, etc. My MAZ covers the bases really well, and sounds d#*m good doing it, anything from twangy country to chunky rock. Mine has an effects loop, but I run everything in the front of the amp, and takes the pedals well to me. This amp sounds great with the master dimed and volume at 2 or higher. That being said, I still want a Sting/Manta ray. If that's what real class A sounds like, I love it. And that's what makes the MAZ 38 so cool. To my ear the MAZ 38 fits right in the middle between class AB and class A as far as even order harmonics go. You get the punch of class AB with the sweetness of class A. I'm definitely recommending head/cabinet if for nothing else, speaker options. When I get my MantaRay head, I'm also going to get an openback 2X12 cab loaded with 30/50 watt weber alnicos, so I can also use it with the Maz. That's my 2 cents Have a great weekend ! Harold

samuelson, I have and use for different variations; * Z-best 2x12 w/ weber 50 Watt alnico silver on top/ celestion G12 h30 on bottom @ 8 ohm's * Z 2x12 open back w/ weber 50 watt alnico blue/ silver combo @ 16 ohm's (Madisons old cab ) * THD 2x12 slot port ( semi open back, great cab, small, light wieght) w/ weber 50 watt ceramic blue/ silver combo @ 8 ohm's * fender 2x12 closed back front loaded w/ 2 weber 30 watt alnico blues @ 8 ohm's *Z 1x12 open back (new design, AWSOME little cab!!!) with a celestion g12 h30 @ 8 ohm's You can't go wrong with DR Z's cabs... every one I've played is outstanding... I also like bob burt's custom cab's he makes a straight front about the size of my THD cab... I'd love to and may get one of his to put those two 30 watt weber blue dogs into it from that fender cab I got cause it's a little too big... Avatar makes really good cabs too, you can't beat those prices... their 2x12 is about the size of my fender cab so its a little big for me but the ones I've played sound GREAT... one of them I've played ( playing a John landgraff head through it) had webers and not the celestions but both brands I've played sounded very, very good through that cab!!! BTW, if your gonna run your 1x12 to an extension 2x12 cab... theres a thread " maz extension cabinet question" in the Maz 38 section that has a thread about a Y cable made to use with your amp if you don't wanna use a cheap Y adapter... this is the linc to the part in case you'd be interested... procablesnsound.com/browse_item_details.asp/Item_ID/623649I made one myself and that Y cable works really well... I've got one of these ordered... I just don't trust the cheaper adapters, and I've spent so much money on guitar cables and other quality sounding gear (DR Z AMPS) that I don't wanna cut corners between the amp and the cab either.... Thanks Jason. You have been very helpful. Some karma for you. Arun, Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it, so many guy's have helped ME on this forum, Like you have with your comments also and probably will in the future... It's a great place... I know we kinda gush alot about it and about each other but I DON"T CARE cause this IS a GREAT FORUM!!I wish we could have a Z-Talk convention or something like that somewhere in the mid part of the US..... ( TEXAS maybe, seems to be a few Z's there already) OR maybe somewhere close to Maple Hts, OH..... THAT'd be worth the drive... It would be so COOL if everybody could actually meet each other... would be real laid back... our wives (or ex-wives) could even get together and complain about our addictions to all that is Z... we could jam... If they could find a box big enough, Groovergeorge and Tasweigan could ship themselves from down under to Maple Hts... UPS! ;D

Have an all day barbecue/jam session. We could bring our favourite Z amps so we can checkout how other guys like to set theirs up. That would be so sweet. Maybe we could have it at Mike Zaite's place or at the Z factory. Kind of like a pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Z. Man that would be too cool. ;D
