For me, the sweet spot is with the master dimed, and the channel volume at 2:00. HUGE. Of course, it's d@mn loud at that point, and some sound guy will probably raise hell.... ;D

but where do you put the "cut" at? and when you say dimmed, where is that. I can play way loud at home so that's not a problem

Hi samuelson, when he say's "dimed" he means ALL the way ON... or master volume WIDE OPEN!! If you think of the KNOBS as a clock face it would be at 5:00... volume at around 2:00 Reverb barely on (mines at 8:00) Bass at 10:00 or just enough to hear it a little middle mine is at 12:30 treble mine is at 11:00 ( bass, mid, and treb, may vary a bit even on my amp according to taste... but you could set em all at 12:00 and it'd still sound good... I know thats weird compared to other amps and takes a little getting used to but don't be suprised if you have some strange looking settings...) Cut (mine is at 10:00) is up to where it start to get a little "hair" on it and may vary depending on how high you set the treble and how loud you set the amp.... if you "dime the master" then you'll probably pull the cut down more but you can also dial the master back a bit from this setting to dial the amp down to the room your in ( see BW setting on the early pages of the ASK BW section of this forum and notice where HIS master is at because of the room) and if you dial the master back THEN you can ease the cut up more to compensate for the master being used to give it BACK that WIDE OPEN sound.... there are VERSIONS of this setting in various places on the MAZ 38 section of this forum and it also works with the JR too cause I tried it and got a MUCH bigger sound with a better headroom out of it!!!! ;D these setting are not set in stone but are a starting point, USE YOUR EARS as a guide...the room your in, YOUR speakers, tubes etc etc... will affect YOUR settings, and the settings may look nothing like your used to!!! treble rolled way back or way up...thats OK cause again, these tones stacks DO NOT react like other amps your familar with...they are very active and actually work (DO something to the sound when you move them around) AND IT will be LOUD if the master is dimed but you can roll it back once it's set this way to fit the room (this master CAN be used to very good effect if need be) and still get that good big tone....this is where the cut comes in handy and also comes in handy when using different guitars (single coils versus humbuckers..) also, again I use the Low input for a little more clean headroom and less gain...mo betta fattness!! congradulations, you found THE sound !!! let us know how you like it when you crank it... oh BTW...wait till you hit a GOOD boost or OD pedal on top of this setting...... Jason

I agree that when the preamp knob is at about 2:00 is the best. With the guitar turned up and maybe a little boost you get a nice drive. Turn the guitar down and it'll clean up. Set the master to suit the room. The tone knobs are just adjusted to taste. They won't effect the breakup, or clean up, much. Not too many guys get to play loud enough to dime the master. 15 years ago I could have but where I gig now, no way, Jose'.

I've found about 7 sweet spots with mine. It just depends on the guitar and musical style.

what about pedals? and Tubes? I put JJ's in my Deville, lone star and traynor and it helped the Deville and Traynor more than the lone star which was great from the start. I have a TS9DX ibanez the kids bought me for christmas. and a bad monkey from long ago. any suggestions on either? thanks.

propellr,
You naield it. I don't think the MAZ has an "un-sweet" spot. I've had my Maz 38 for just about a week and I am thrilled with this thing. Dr. Z is truly a genius! I like it with the volume at max, master about 9 o'clock, cut about 8-9 o'clock. Treble and Mid about noon with just a taste of bass until right. I've got old tweed Fender amps that sound really good but not like this thing. It's a beast of an amp waiting to be let loose! Clean is very good too but push this amp up a bit and it will tear your head off with tone.
Do you think I like it...............
Regards, Jeff

The sweet spot I've found is any circle I draw on the floor and put my Maz inside. ;D thats funny....also true ;D and bluzsteel said: " LOUD..... thats the sweet spot" ummm..... Ditto so I guess basically the sweet spot is wherever you MAZ SR is sitting.....1st HAVING the amp, then plugging your guitar into it, and turning it up.... IS the sweet spot... I'll go along with that..... ;D

I keep playing with different settings, just to get to know the amp, but something unexpected is happening. I'm interacting a lot more with my guitar. Those volume and tone knobs on my guitar seem HUGE now. It's going to take a while for me to decide where I like everything the most. The sound I keep dialing in with my ES-335 plugged in is:
low input volume 10:00 treble 1:00 mids 12:00 bass 8:30 master 1:00 cut 10:30
Then, I just control my sound with my volume and tone controls from my guitar and with my pick attack-- it feels like a five speed does after years of automatic transmission, like I'm finally the one doing the driving!
(of course, then I'll point the amp volume to the sky, peg the master, and shake the plaster loose!)
These adjustments can be really personal, though. It's like a good adjustible bucket seat; you're going to try those amp settings at some point and feel like you're opening the car door only to slam your knees into the steering wheel like someone else's been driving your car. Really, though, samuelson, if you try your custom with those settings and play smooth open sustaining chords at a moderate pace, you'll be hearing the sound in my head for sure!

All spots are sweet, at least soon as you are loud enough to get some bass frequencies generated.
I did a jazz gig last night in a supermarket---master all the way up and volume at 8 or 9 o'clock. Bass and Treble up all the way, mid about 2:00. Cut was off.
