I ordered my maz 38 without reverb about 4 weeks ago...........now I am having second thoughts about whether I made a mistake and should have ordered it with reverb.............I was thinking it would be nice to have the best of both worlds.........i.e....a pedal ( I have a holy grail that does not hummm) so I could go with or without reverb at my discretion..... My question is if I decide to use the reverb pedal route, should I make sure I change the order to include an effects loop?..............Does the reverb sound more natural through the effects loop? I am not a big reverb guy, but, a very small amount is nice..........for getting real bluesy....... Maybe I should just change the order to include "verb".......just cannot decide. I know BW's sound works for me.......and his maz has verb........... Confused here?

I like reverb, just a wash in the background. If you use a reverb pedal run it thru the effects loop.

19jmm68, I think you'll LOVE the senior NR... I have a 38 reverb head BUT mine has the fx loop too just in case my reverb dies on me or something.... I think your best of both worlds is right on.... less tubes to change / worry about also... the main difference between the reverb model and the NR model is the NR may have a little more gain available.... I think this is GOOD... if I were to get another MAZ JR OR SR it would definitely be NR model with the loop for my holy grail... RUN THE GRAIL THROUGH THE LOOP THOUGH... thats what doc designed it for.... thats the way I ran my maz JR NR... grail through loop..got some of the best tone I ever got with it but needed a little more headroom... enter the senior! You should be able to get the sound you want out of the NR.... you'll be able to get that BW type sound with it, it's in there!!.... are you getting a combo or a head??? if a head what cab??? SR's got some SERIOUS low end with the Z-best.... RELAX.... if you are familiar with that amp and like the sound YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE IT!!! ;D Jason

I spent Monday at the nearest Z dealer extensively comparing the MAZ18 JR, JR NR, and SR NR. I was not able to play a SR with 'verb. However, I believe that what I experienced with the JR 'verb vs. non-verb probably applies to the SR as well. I believe that all MAZ's, when ordered in the NR configuration, come standard with an effects loop. So, no worries there. My opinion is that all Dr. Z amps with the EL84's produce so much harmonic color and "swirl" on their own that they do not need reverb. The SR NR I tried absolutely blew my doors off; it was one of the richest, fattest sounding amps I've ever heard. However, I already have a Stingray which is a four EL84 amp, and is even more harmonically complex. So I set my sights on the two JR's. After a long test I decided that the NR was slightly, but noticeably more open, harmonically complex, ballsier, and in general a little more fun to play. I went home with the MAZ JR NR. I prefer delay to reverb, and either sounds great through the JR's effects loop. However, I do notice a slight degradation of sound when running 'verb or delay through the loop- just like the change in feel of going from the NR to JR w/'verb! It's very slight but it's noticeable. So by getting the NR I believe you can get the best of both worlds. I know you're going to love the SR NR!

Thanks guys............that really helps me...........I did not know that the NR came with an effects loop..................and then I was not sure if running the HG through the effects loop would sound good............but according to you guys it does! So I guess I'll stay the course on my tan on tan maz 38 head........... Does running the Delay through the Efx loop sound better as well? Are there certain pedals that should be going thru the efx loop while other ones can stay up front.......all simultaneously.................or does everyone run their whole board through the efx loop.......... JGleaton- I'll be running it through my 2x 12 z best stock from the Doc.........I have been told that is a killer sound I cannot wait.

19jmm68....
YES, the NR Maz series all have the FX loop, the ONLY thing I ever run through the loop is the holy grail... haven't tried delay, but I know some guy's HAVE run the grail or other reverb before the input.... others guy's may be running other fx though the loop but I haven't so I'll let them chime in about that....
I know on my old prescription (no loop) I used to run the GRAIL before the input (was last in chain on the pedal board) and sounded fine to me.... guess it's just a matter of YOUR taste... but if I had the loop I prefer to use it for the reverb.
I don't think you'd lose any more running the grail through the loop than you would lose if you had reverb in the circuit already....
I think mine sounded fine run through the loop (MHO) and you've got the OPTION of running it without.... AND pdw is right that you may not need much if any reverb with these amps.... I find myself using less that EVER and I love my ghia (tried the grail with it) but prefer to run it sans reverb...
YOU WILL LOVE THE SR RUNNING THROUGH THE Z-BEST!!! thats how I run mine.... got several cabs but I prefer that one....great cab.... ;D

Any time related effect, chorus, flange, reverb delay goes thru the loop. If you run those sounds into a distorted amp it's hard to control and not too pretty sounding either. Tremolo, distortion, booster, things that interact with the preamp, goes in the front. I think one reason I like some reverb is because of recordings. You'd be hard pressed to find dry recorded guitar. And sometimes you'd really be surprised to hear how much reverb is on a guitar. It can be hard to notice if it's done right, but it's there. Jeff Beck's Truth album has some cool reverb effects. A slapback plate off to one side. Fun to hear.

Thanks for that info BG.............I am relatively new to using effects........basically pre "Z" I was never happy enough with my amp's tone to even get into effects pedals........now its like a whole new world has opened up with tone. I knew there was a basic rule for using some efx in the loop and some in front.............just been too lazy to look into it right now. You have made my life easier with that info. BTW "Truth" is easily in my top 10 of all time records. I wanna get my band to do "let ME Love You Baby"..........

After a long test I decided that the NR was slightly, but noticeably more open, harmonically complex, ballsier, and in general a little more fun to play. PDW I found this to be exactly the same with the Maz Sr.
