Just got my Maz 38 on MLK holiday and I'm breaking her in at present. What's up with this faint, sparse, Rice Krispies noise I'm getting every once in a while? Does a speaker make any audible noise other than music while it's being "broken in" (you know, like the sound your oven makes as the metal is expanding when it heats up)? It was very faint and I found I couldn't replicate it with certain notes, chords, pick action, volume, or tone. I unplugged my tuner and plugged straight in, changed cables, rolled my guitar volume and tone up and down to make sure it wasn't the pots, and changed the settings on the amp. I played open chords, played percussively, played lead tones, and everything. I'm going to change cables again tonight and plug into a different outlet. Could be a vibration from something in the cabinet behind where my amp was, but the noise seemed to be independent of what I was doing. I thought it was my strap squeaking against the strap button as I would change position, but it was coming from the speakers and not while I was changing positions.

That could be noise on the power line. I've noticed that on a tube amp when a storm was heading our way.

Thanks for the info, gents. Bluzsteel, I'll try that. I am almost positive it's the power.

bluzsteel,
Yep. You guessed it. I did what you said to do and bent my ear. "Snap, Crackle, Pop. Rice Krispies!"

The vintage 1907 knob and tube wiring throughout the house is telling me it's probably not the amp. The service upgrade and rewiring was scheduled for October, but my electrician is not returning my calls. I'm upping my calls to him from once a day to twice a day beginning today.

Wow, you still have working knob/tube wiring in your house? Ive seen remnants of it in old houses but Ive never seen it still in use. I was going to suggest tightening the chassis bolts until I read about your wiring! Mine had some noise on its first outing, tightened the chassis bolts and it stopped.

Another really good source of noise is my "Invisible Fence" that keeps my dogs in the yard. If you play single coils in the non-hum canceling positions, it'll drive you nuts. It's not just a hum; it's a modulated signal.

I've also noticed if my cell phone rings while I'm playin...I can hear it through the amp...weird stuff... I play with a guy who puts his cell phone on top of his amp every night...and every night he gets a call and he has to either stop playing to turn the amp off (if he's playing acoustic) or move the phone. You'd think he'd learn

My Maz goes through hell when a call is about to come in. I have to run over and flip the standby. This happens with the cell phone just being in the same room.
