I think the amp is great for everything apart from heavily distorted styles. Great clean sounds through overdrive sounds.

My apologies. I thought I had posted a response to this quote in another section. I can't find it now. Must be the drugs I took in the 60s!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This may be posted somewhere, but I am really intrested in getting a Maz 38, for professional use, but I need to know if I can achieve an alternitive rock to modern country sound from it. I have a maxon OD pedal which Im sure will help.
Any thoughts? please.
Thank you.

I thought I sent a reply to this one as well (?). Oh, well... Yes, the MAZ series will cover a lot of ground. Just about any kind of "roots" music is where the 38 or 18 fits.... I'm sure you could do metal with one- but not sure if you'd want to. ;-)

When I was making my decision on whether or not to buy this amp the thing that sealed it for me was the Led Zep tone I got out of it with the gain turned all the way up with my Les Paul. The SR. has got GREAT clean tones but it will do rock and roll really well. It's really versatile. If ya want more gain than that ya have to visit pedalville. I agree with JChance, the Doc makes some other amps that might do heavy rock and roll a little better. Route 66, KT45 maybe?

1st post, longtime lurker. I cannot recall any amp that covers more ground, more impressively than the 38. Versatility and bang-for-the-buck value are off the charts, IMHO. I've had mine for a couple years now, and I continue to be all smiles about what this amp can do. I'm not a big pedal guy, but I do like to run an old "black-box" Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal into this amp. The pedal doesn't have tons of gain (it can be easily tweaked for more), but it does a great job of adding some Marshall-flavored chunk and harmonics to the tone. As others have mentioned so often, the 38 takes pedals beautifully, and this pedal works great with mine. These old, made-in-UK Bluesbreaker pedals fly a little under the radar, and every so often can be had on ebay for not a whole lot of coin. I think I paid $69 for mine last year. If I wanted, I could get a Klon, Landgraff or whatever pricey booteek, but I just don't see a need for what I do. YMMV. I'm a blues player who extends over into rock, alt.country and various "roots" styles, and this amp covers it all in spades. If an AC30 and a BF Pro Reverb had a kid, I think the 38 would be it. Dialing in some Plexi-like flavors with the Bluesbreaker pedal gives me everything I need and then some. Whether it's Les Pauls, 335s, Teles or Strats, the 38 loves them all:) I think a Z-28 might be next
