I'm just curious as to whether any any other maz 38 players in the forum were influenced in their decision to buy this amp, based on BW's sound.

I saw him playing on TV a few months ago. I thought, hey this guy's pretty darn good, especially for someone I hadn't seen before. Glad to know we're in good company. It's always nice to know that high level pros are into a piece of gear you're into. Probably would have bought the 38 anyway though.

I purchased the CD "Stories" so I could here everything. Turns out it rarely leaves my cd player now. One of the best CD's in my collection.
The mp3 clips and CD was a huge factor in my purchase. It's hard to buy something sight unseen, but if you like what you here from the BW clips, you'll pretty much get that in real life.
Well, back to my geetar... I've been trying to spend more playing than surfing this site ... no offence, but my typing skills isn't the thing that's lacking here! ;-)
Merry Christmas everyone!

Dang that's MTY purty Madison!! Buddy has a Blonde MAZ Sr head now... for those "Euro" gigs...guess I should let him borrow my Blonde Z-Best to go with it ;^)
Yep I hadn't heard Buddy in years ...then a couple-o-years ago I heard him at a local club...a few weeks later I bought a MAZ Sr... I had some financial difficulties & ended up selling it ...but ... I'm all Z'd & Lentz'd up now :^) now if I could just play like him I'd be set !

Well, in my case I'd heard of Dr. Z amps, but wasn't really aware of them untill a friend phoned me and told me to check out some maz 38 song clips on the Dr. Z site. They turned out to be the four clips that Buddy played. In a lot of cases when you hear clips, they're either over processed or in some cases not even the equipment that the endorsee actually uses. The tone wasn't like anything I'd heard in years, and Buddy's playing made it stand out all the more. Two days later we went down to the Z dealer here in the city to see if they were the same amp. Needless to say, after about 20 minutes of demo'ing the 38 senior he bought his that day, and I waited a week while they shipped one in from another store. I've been playing for quite awhile, and used to make a living at it. I've played strats since the 70's and have only found 1 marshall that I thought sounded really good with a strat. It was an old 67 marshall orange plexi head and 4x10 cab that was made for the Guess Who (Canadian Band). I was just a young teenager and picked it up for 650. in 1973 with the help of my dad. Years later I was doing a lot more outdoor venues in the summer and decided I needed something louder, thinking all marshalls would sound the same. Man, you live and learn. I know it sounds like real exaggeration, but this amp has the same qualities as that one. It breathed, and sounded big and warm. Not a brick to the side of the head, which is what most marshalls have reminded me of. I've had 4 plexis, and a ton of blackface amps, and I'm not kidding when I say this thing takes me back to those years. It has the best qualities of both a great plexi and blackface amp and can go either way, depending on how you set the controls. I'm getting about 2-3 hours of practice a night now. This sucker makes you want to play. Thanks Dr. Z and thanks Buddy. I'm looking forward to getting out there again.

I would say "Mists of Time" attracted me to the Senior as much as anything prior to purchasing.

Talk about expanding your universe. You are so lucky that there was a Sr to try out in a store. Thats a rare find these days! pg

Yea, it was kind of a fluke how it all came together. I've sure got no complaints. As far as an attenuator, I already have a great unit called the ultimate attenuator. It's very transparent and doesn't compress at all. I've used it for some other amps in the past that have needed it, and also with the maz 38, but I found that the 38 sounds better without any attenuation.

Dave, I'd like to hear that Tonker. I've had that hunnerd watt Celestion, voice-coil rubbin' cone cryin' son of a gun in there for so long now that it'd be hard to change, but I like the idea of a little more apparent headroom. Mark, that 'Mists of Time' tune was 335>MAZ Senior>reconed Vox Bulldog (blue, Classic Lead 80 kit installed) STILL rubs and makes racket up around the 15th fret on the 'b' strang when ya bend that 'd' up to 'e', but whatcha gon' do? Tried my ol' EVM 12L and it was pretty horrid. It's jes' part of the tonal envelope I guess, and can be covered up by sloppy substandard playing techniques.
