Hi guy's, I read in a thread here a while back to plug my guitar into the LOW input, turn the master volume wide open to use the volume knob only (basically turning the amp into a non-master volume amp)!!! I also read it would have a little more headroom, be a little warmer and more fendery in a good way...... I 've also read that alot of guy's have bought these amps recently and for you guy's just getting these amps....... ALL of this is true!!!! I've been using the Maz 38 like this EVER SENSE and I LOVE IT!!!!!!! I highly reccomend trying this type setting....even if you use the master volume or other setting at some point....this is a VERY useful setting to be able to dial up IMHO!! I will be using this setting from now on..... BIG TONE!!!

That's an interesting idea. I just received my new Maz 38 Senior 2x12 last week from Humbucker music in Georgia and have been trying to figure out how to blend the volume and master volume controls for the best result. How does this setup work with overdrive and distortion pedals? I use a reissue TS808 for overdrive and an AnalogMan modified Boss DS-1 Pro for higher gain/Marshall type sounds. How do you think the headroom would hold up using this setting? Thanks for the idea...

Hi tonezealot, congrats on getting your Maz 38 ........I run mine basically the same way.... I use a keeley modded truebypass ts 808 w/ vintage chip..... a landgraff boost..... and a landgraff od (basically also a ts 808 but an OUTSTANDING one)!!! the boost really just adds a little extra, fatness.....I use the 808 for a little more overdrive than just the boost or plain amp and the landgraff for even more overdrive (marshally)....... I can also combine the boost with either pedal to push either od pedal over the top! ....for me there is plenty of head room with this setup, as a matter of fact i used it for 2 1/2 hrs at practice last night and I can not only dime the master volume but I can turn the volume to 3-4 o-clock and still get a LOUD clean sound..... (has a little hair on it around 2 or 3 but still clean unless you hit the strings hard....but then you may notice you won't use your pedals as much OR when you use them you won't need to turn them up/ use as much gain/ drive on them.....and the AMP WILL JUST SING!! even just a boost will give a whole lotta meat to the notes!!! I LOVE this setting....I will be using this from now on!!!!! (also run a prescription at the same time w/ airbreak) you would think this is too loud but it's really not....it's smooth, warm and the highs aren't too high... and the amp is the soooo responsive........ The headroom will hold up great and your pedals will explode through the speakers.....use the low input (you can try the high.....I tried the high also but I liked the low input better for headroom and warmth!!) Buddy whittington uses a similar set-up on his Maz-38 but only turns the Master volume up to around 12:00 I think....you could try his set-up too look at the "Q for BW" thread running right now in the general board.... Just remember the CUT is important and I also keep mine around 9:00..... trebles around 1:00......I turn my bass up a little compared to buddy though....about 11:00 the rest is the same execpt for the master volume....of course I don't think he uses pedals and runs into the High input..... (He also turns his volume to around 3:00 which is where mine is from practice last night)

jgleaton,
Thanks for the input...I'll try it out tonight and really test it out this weekend at a jam. I gotta say, this is hands downt the best amp I've ever owned or played. I've spent a lot of $$$$ and owned so many amps to find this one. Somewhere down the road I bought into the idea that if you wanted to play modern alternative rock, you had to have a channel switching 100W Mesa or some other loud monstrosity to get the tone. I sold my Mesa Stiletto Duece 100W head to get this amp and I have never been so happy with my playing. The Maz just does what you want it to. It makes your Strat sound like the best Strat you've ever heard, it makes your Les Paul sound beefier and woodier than any Paul you've heard. It's just pure tone, no cheesy preamp distortion circuits, no unnecessary channel switching. It sounds amazing no matter what I do to it (just gotta watch the treble). And I've never experienced "playing" an amplifier, having it respond and interact with the player and the guitar so intimately. The Maz is an instrument in its own right. With the high wattage atomic Mesa's I had been playing, you can never "get to know" the amplifier, they're just too powerfull. All the things we guitarists love about tube amps get lost in all that power (unless you don't value your hearing). Thanks again for the tips, I'm glad to belong to the Dr. Z family!

Greg, DITTO! the amp almost plays itself doesn't it, like it knows what your gonna do.... almost have to learn the amp...not overplay it but, enjoy it....you don't have to overwork it like other amps..... " I have never been so happy with my playing. The Maz just does what you want it to." " It sounds amazing no matter what I do to it (just gotta watch the treble). And I've never experienced "playing" an amplifier, having it respond and interact with the player and the guitar so intimately. The Maz is an instrument in its own right " ummmmm DITTO!! Exactly how I feel...I play blues but, alternative, country....it doesn't matter...GOOD TONE....is GOOD TONE!!! let me know on this thread how it goes tonight / and this weekend and...... Welcome to the family.... it's up to us to spread the gospel of Z.... Jason

I run my Maz 38 212 like that. My recorded tone is better now than it has ever been. The engineer at the studio I work at said it is the best tone he has ever recorded. Thanks Doc
