Anybody out there tried different speakers in your Maz 38 212. I currently have the V30 and the G12H30. I'm looking to tame some of the high end and get a little more low end punch. I was thinking maybe the Weber Blue and Silver bell alnico 50 watters. Thanks guys. Boo

I bought my Maz 38 212 used with Eminence GB12s in it. It sounded good, but the bass was a bit flabby and the highs too piercing with my Teles. I put in a Weber Blue Dog Alnico and an Eminence Red Fang, both 30W, and the difference is amazing. Much tighter low end and beautiful chimey highs without the shrill. I was keeping the cut knob at about 9 o'clock and still rolling off my tone control when on the bridge pup,and now I set it at about 11 and leave the tone knob alone. I think the Red Fang is a real sleeper, and Music 123 matched the $129 price from some audio company I found doing a web search..

I'm awaiting my Maz 38 Sr (in transit), but have my "bottom feeder" set of speakers awaiting...an Eminence Tonker/Swamp Thang combo. I have an Avatar 2x12 cab with that configuration that I use for bigger gigs with my old blackface Deluxe Reverb. The bottom is as solid and tight as ever heard in a 2x12 configuration. But it is VERY clean... the only distortion will be the Maz, not the speakers. Not advised if ya need an early speaker breakup. I use a couple Celestion Blues for that application...
Another favorite is a Tonker and a Red Fang... huge bottom and nice chime as previously mentioned

I replaced the Celestion Blues in my 2*12 with the Weber Alnicos 1 Blue and 1 Silver Bell (rated at 50 watts each) Much less harsh with big smooth mids. Still has some chime, but not too much as with the Blues. Much more versatile, and well worth the effort!

If you really want a great sound, try a combo of a Jensen C-12N and Celestion G-12H 30. I'M telling you, this give you a very good mix between fender and british tones when you need them, and you really can't beat a well worn in C-12N (even the new ones) when you play a lot. The C-12N gives a little more warmness than the V-30 and in my opinion as much detail, while you can't beat the G12 H for lows and break up. The C12 N breaks up great too, and is really one of the best deals going at less than 50.00. This is an underrated speaker and try this combo and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Emi Swamp Thang & Tonker. Both speakers have a big, tight low end, kind of like Jennifer Lopez. The Tonker is very open sounding, with a sweet & chimey top end. The Swamp Thang is a bit darker, with less chime and slightly scooped mids. They are both REALLY LOUD & CLEAN. They both have the same sensitivity ratings, so they mate very well...niether dominates the other. They also compliment each others strengths & weaknesses in a way that make them sound like one speaker, instead of 2 separate speakers fighting each other. My Z-best with a G12H/V30 combo never had a synergy to my ear. I always heard them working separately. The Tonker/Thang combination sounds great clean or distorted. Overall, I would say the sound is big, loud and proud. Combined, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I just sold my G12H because it just sounded small, nasal and compressed compared to either of these Emis. I didn't believe allot of the hype surrounding the Patriot & Red Coat lines when Emi first issued them. After reading countless positive reviews for about 6 months, I bit the bullet and got a Swamp Thang. Loved it so much I tried a Tonker. Man, I can't even listen to G12Hs & Vintage 30s anymore. I had them both and sold them off. I must qualify that I am not an Alnico, thin cone breakup kind of player. If someone is looking for that, these are NOT your speakers. These are the Phil Spector "Wall of Sound". I'm getting down from my soap box now.

guitarman1;
After your speaker swap in the Z-Best, did you get:
1. more clean headroom at louder volumes 2. lag in distortion as you turn up
I have toyed with the idea of changing speakers in my 2X12 open back Z cab and leaving the Z-Best as is...I like the sound of both, but would like a bit more clean, full sound out of the open-back.

"After your speaker swap in the Z-Best, did you get:

Ditto, I use a Maz 38 head w/ verb and play through either Z-best or 2X12 openback.....
put weber Ceramic 50 watt blue/ silver in open back...SWEEEEET.
and I still like the stock Z-best but just for fun I put a weber Alnico 50 watt silver (love that speaker) in top and left the G12h in the bottom....very cool sound!!! ceramic= bright ,immedite, tight bottom/ alnico, warmer smoother creamy high.... mix's very cool!
I would HIGHLY recommend a speaker swap....one day I'm gonna try the swamp/ tonker when I have a cab/ combo to put em in....also, if you have a couple of cabs, different speakers in them makes it a little more versatile....
I also had an old fender 2X12 plain old closed back cab I've had forever, redid the grille in wheat (for a blk and wheat) .... rewired it and Just for fun I put a couple of weber alnico 30 watt blues in it and wow... it made that cabinet...it really sounds good...was a darker cab and the blues just made it pop..not to harsh on the highs....made for a nice cabinet...I was thinkin of selling it before I did that but not now......
I kinda always leaned towards the ceramic, loud and clean kinda thing myself but after experimenting I like the alnico too and different mixes of both, higher and lower wattage speakers.... getting several different sounding cabs ....Just got a ghia 2X10 and I've never been a 10 fan unles theres 4 of em (bassman/ super) but MAN that little Z-10 cab rocks....and you gotta play it with a band to get the full effect...
so whether your having problems taming the highs on the 38 w/ single coils, or not getting enough head room out of the Maz 18 or even 38....definitely think about trying different speaker's, you can try a bunch and you can always put the originals back in.... I had a lot of fun experimenting with different speaker and the swap worked for me...now I can't decide which one to use...great problem to have ;D

Thanks for the info jgleaton. Could you please describe a Blue Dog Ceramic & Silver Bell compared to a G12H. I'm thinking about getting a chimey & open mids speaker with early breakup so I can get some dirt out of my Ghia at low volumes. One thing I don't like about the G12H is that it sounds a bit honky/peaky in the mids. Are the Webers more open and break up sooner than the G12h? Are Webers less efficient than a G12H? Also, do the Weber Alnico breakup sooner than the ceramics?

Hi guitarman1, The CERAMIC webers are DEFINITLEY more open and depending on the wattage / can break up sooner or later...the way It was explained to me was they all are loud speakers but the 30 watters/ lower wattage start breaking up sooner and the higher wattage would break up later/ so my 50 watters have more (alot) more smooth clean headroom.... The g12h breaks up pretty early if used by itself in my opinion... so I'm not so sure a 30 watt weber is gonna break up any earlier/ or be less less efficient, but weber makes the speakers ( i know he makes the CERAMIC AND ALNICO blues) in 15 watt variations which I think would give you that earlier break-up/ less efficiency your looking for....just need to make sure they can handle the 18 watt ghia?? Jchance on this forum helped me out alot, if you want to hear some samples you can go to the sounds section of this forum and hear him playing the ceramic blue/ silver... REAL GOOD idea of what they really sound like.... you can also go to the weber website and hear jchance playing the CERAMIC's (blue/ silver) and the brad paisley playing the ALNICO versions for a real good example of the difference in the sound between them....... listen to the silver as opposed to the blue!! man the silver sounds awesome... not quite the chime the blue has, just little warmer/ darker but cool....great sound! if i'm not mistaken I think the silver was partly designed w/ Dr Z as weber's green back alternative... and alnicos seem to break up even a little sooner than my ceramics but really have a little compressed sound, and NOT as open sounding as the ceramics, you might like them but not really what your describing as "open".... Mr Weber can also help you with info on what your after, he's really nice and makes outstanding speakers.....btw get at least "light dope" on them.... " I'm thinking about getting a chimey & open mids speaker" sounds like the ceramic blue dog is what your describing your looking for....and maybe weber could even make it in a wattage less than the 30 watter for ya but more than the 15 watt ? ( I thought he made a 20 watt version but I could be wrong?)....I'd ask Mr Weber, i'd think a 20 watt would be enough to handle the ghia without blowing out and give you the earlier distorion, open-ness and chime your looking for, 15 WATT might also work.... jchance could probably help answer alot of questions for ya also.....helped me tremendously. hope it helps, Jason BTW, hows your nicotine removal going now?? and I was right there with ya on that post, this is a great forum and I for one would like to see it stay that way...

Man jgleaton...thanks for that extensive explanation. You got some karma for that. I ordered a 30 watt, lightly doped ceramic Blue Dog after hearing from you, jchance & madison and listening to the sound clips. Madison did some nice clips too. I went with the 30 watter so I could use it with my Maz Sr. occasionally, as well as my Ghia. Even with just the Ghia, I feel more comfortable with 30 watts at $115.00 a pop. To all of you guys...thanks for all of your help. PS: Still not smoking. My family is missing, but still not smoking.

Hi guys! Philberto here, my first post. I just got a Dr.Z Mas 38 NR 2-12 combo. Mine dates to 2003, and has two Celestion 70th Anniversary Special Edition G12 H 30 W in it. Does anyone know if this was stock? Most models I read about in the posts seem to have 2 different speakers. Anyway, these speakrs sound absolutely great! Take care, Brothers of the Z

Philberto, Welcome to the forum, you've got a great amp IMHO!! The speakers COULD be stock... I HAVE seen two G-12 H 30's in Z's before.... BUT they also COULD have been swapped... The G-12 is my favorite celestion speaker... I have one in my Z 1x12 cab and left one it the BOTTOM of my Z-best... they are usually paired with the Celestion VINTAGE 30 ( which is a very good combination esspecially in the Z-BEST)... but alot of guy's don't like the MID heavy sound the Vintage 30 has... If you like the sound then I wouldn't worry about it being STOCK or not.. I would probably prefer the two G 12's anyway.. you can really have some fun with some SPEAKER SWAPPIN and I HIGHLY recommend doing that... I found several Webers I Love... you can go to the SOUNDS section of this forum and look for a thread that JChance posted with a linc to him playing different Weber speakers for a REAL good Idea of what they sound like with a DR Z amp (there are several w/ his MAZ 38)... Jason - thanks for the excellent info! I have a Vintage 30 here at the house and I may drop it in just to check it out. I actually may try TWO of them, just to see what it sounds like. I am looking for a more rock sound - I am using a THD hotplate and diming the volumes. Take care. Blessings, Phillll

philberto,
i've got 2 V30s in my Rx and thurned up it's an agressive rock and roll animal but it is very forward sounding. I was thinking of swapping in a G-H12-30 to tame things a bit for a smoother tone. be interested in hearing your opinion. if you end up with a spare Gh you want to excess i'd be interesed if i haven't alerady found one (broke in already is a big plus over new).
