I've had some time to settle into Curt's old 6545. One gig and a number of hours in the basement. I didn't have a SRZ-65LE to compare the 65 side, but I used to own one till I sold it to Hogridr and I remember - vividly - what it sounded like. Awesome amp.
The 65 side of the 6545 is great too, but, to my ears, it's slightly different tonally than my old LE. Curt made the same comment to me in a email.
I'm curious - is there some slight difference in the make up of the two? Are they the same beast or am I just hearing things? Doc? Myles? Brent???

Well, I know the SRZ has a presence knob and the 6545 does not. I think my 65 side is pretty gainy, but I've also heard the the SRZ is more so.

SRZ has more gain. And the Presence knob is a HUGE factor in dialing in the tone.
I really missed the Presence control on my 6545. Can't quite get to the JCM800 type of gain on the 6545 (even with GT SAG kit/biasing etc). Easily get there with the SRZ. 6545 is more old-skool 70's type tones (Hiwatt/Plexi). Great amp design.

I'd agree with that. I ABd it with a '72 Orange OR120, and the 65 side sounds like the 120 in it's sweet spot. The Z has much more control, between the gain kno and a useful master volume (this particular Orange has a non-original master that is worthless). Huge sound, great rock amps, both of them.

I have owned two LE SRZ 65's and played a 3rd @ Z's shop, my take, for what I want, the 65 side is better and more useable, the SRZ LE's have more gain and are more 'crispy' and bright. on the SRZ's I would run the gain way down @ 8/9:00 and it was still too much for my needs. The 65 side of this amp the perfect spot for the gain knob was 2:00 for me, big difference, killer tone this one. I am fairly sure the presence knob has more than a little to do with this. If the 65 side circuit from this 6545 was a stand alone amp I'd buy it in a heartbeat, next best thing? The hopefully new for '09 4x6V6 Proto type from Z Fest 2008.
