I heard a Dr. Z amp and fell in love with the sound. I started researching all Dr. Z amps and really don't know where to start. I am a rythm player that plays small clubs and bars. We play everything from Hendrix, Crowes, Dead, SRV, Aerosmith etc...
I am looking for an amp that has a awesome clean sound but can have a nice overdrive tone when needed at less volume.
Combo or Head?
Any Suggestions on where to start? Amps to look at? What is the most versatile?

Three models come to mind: The Carmen Ghia, the Maz Jr, and the RX Jr. They are 18 watts, 18 watts, and 15 watts respectively. All three can have fabulous cleans. Two have master volumes, so they have a bit more flexibility in that regard (Maz Jr and RX Jr). The RX Jr can get the most saturated tones, but the Ghia is very close in this regard. The Ghia doesn't have a master volume, so you have to get pretty loud to get to the overdrive. The Maz master volume works a little different from that of the RX Jr, in that as you turn it up, you also get a bit more overdrive.
You really should try them all if possible, because they all sound a bit different, and everyone listens for their own version of great tone. You really can't go wrong with any of them, but I think the Maz Jr and RX Jr are probably more flexible - just depends how much gain you really need for the dirty stuff.
As far as the head/combo question, I think that's really more of a preference thing. I have a Maz Jr Combo and an RX Jr head with a 1x12 Convertible cab here. I end up using the Maz because I like the grab and go convenience of the combo, even though it's a lot heavier to move. There are advantages to the head/cab setup though - you can get two cabs that are different and use them where appropriate.
Good luck!

I would go the Maz Jr. route. With what you said you're playing, it sounds like you need a lot of tones, and the Maz has a lot of tones to offer and is more of a mix of Fender, Marshall, and Vox than the other two amps. I find that the Ghia leans towards Marshall/Vox and the RX Jr. leans more towards a Vox with dirt.
I would definitely go with the Maz Jr. combo.

I have to agree with bt and stu. Try all three, but pay attention to the Maz jr. Very versitile. If I was still 'looking' for something, I'd go Maz jr, but I found my happy place with a Ghia.
I'm a head/cab guy. To me it's easier to grab and go with a head in one hand and a cab in the other instead of all the weight in one hand. Plus, with cabs, it makes it more versitile. I use different cabs for different rooms. Big room, Z Best. Practice, 1x12.

Hi. Mazjr18 NR top and a 2X10" convertible... That's all there is to it Seriously, this is a great set up that's diverse 3D sounding and with good headroom. NR has a little more gain than a rev modell and a top more headroom than a combo version. But, they all sound good though... Jan
