I just bought a Z28 1x12 combo (Greenback). Incredible sound!!!. I also read about the huge improvement NOS 6V6 tubes made on it. I´m a tone freak, I just can´t help it javascript:add(%22%20;D%22), so I decided to buy a pair of matched NOS GEC 6V6. I have no experience biasing, but I´m quite do-it-yourself kinda guy. Anyone has experience biasing the Z28?? It is factory loaded with Electro Harmonix 6V6. Will it work if I just replace the tubes (I guess not)... Anyone replaced their tubes for the GECs??? I also bought different NOS preamp tubes. I will AB-test all of them on the Z28 and the Mazerati. I´ll post the conclusions. Thank you.

I would have the bias done by someone who knows what they are doing... perhaps learn how to do it as well...I would vote for not guessing around inside the chassis if you are not a 100% sure of what you are doing and why you are doing it. I know, made the same mistakes myself....figured, how hard can it be...not hard, but you have to know what you are doing and what to watch out for. I only do what I know these days, if I have any doubt, I don;t mess with it. You may want to change the rectifier tube as well...I use a mullard and it make the single most dramatic improvement in sound.. I have some NOS blackplates but frankly the stock JJ's sound pretty good to me....I cant say the NOS don;t sound great they do but so do the JJ's....albiet a bit different but not better or worse...just different....this is the answer you give when a woman asks you if your ex was "better" than her....there is no better or worse, just different....that usually slows them down enough to buy you some time to totally change the direction of the conversation.. You will be asked about 3 weeks later what you ment by that so be prepared. sorry about the off topic rant, sorta got carried away ..... if you are not sure, don;t mess around...bad for the amp, real bad for you

Thank you. That´s probably what I´ll do: learn how to adjust the bias being with the technician while he adjusts it. I want to experiment more than once with power tubes and I don´t want to be going to the tech that often. Anyway there should be a simple diagram somewhere (with pics or graphics) explaining how to do it.
I guess answering girls is way more complicated than replacing tubes. The good thing is you try different flavours and find the one that fits you most.

Assume you mean the tubes and not the girls? Re the biasing- Dan Torres Inside Tube Amps is great as is Gerald Weber's A Desktop Reference to Hip Vintage Guitar Amps there are also things like the Dr Z site bias notes and things like this: www.aikenamps.com/Biasing.htmlAll the best Brett

Make sure when you are poking around in there you keep one hand in yer pocket...strange things can happen when you touch electronics!

Curious, how many similarities between girls and tubes. Strange things happen when you touch ´em too. Physics
