Hello,
I am thinking of purchasing a new Ghia 1X12. Can the clean headroom be increased by changing the tubes??
Are there any drawbacks or negative affects?
Solid recommendations that work??
Thanks!!

This may sounds silly, but have you played one? Those are 18 "Z" watts, and not to be toyed with. But to answer your question, some tweaking can be done with tubes to increase headroom, but it won't turn it into a Twin.

Ok, I hear ya.
But I thought if you went with a higher rated output tube (GT's) it may be possible??

You can also increase your headroom by swapping out the speaker for an Eminence Tonker or something with a 103 db rating. Weber Californians and Chicago models have a a big clean tone.

Yes you can with higher rated GT tubes, but I've never felt the need to. #6 rating is what came in mine and it has plenty headroom. And yes a more efficient speaker will help, but if you're getting a 1x12 combo, I would stay away from the Celestion Blue and go G12H or V30.

One VERY solid rec. that I know of from personal experience that will increase your clean headroom is: Swap the PI (V2) to a 12BH7. KILLER.....FWIW. I, unlike Lefty (whom is a VERY knowledgeable dude) LOVE the C/blue Ghia 1x12 combo. It is the Shiz. (for me) OK...maybe not for cleans. But hey....we're talkin' tone rite?

Check w/Mike at KCA tubes. You can do a search on members here and find him, or....google KCA tubes. You can get NOS or equivalent. Roughly 20 bucks man. I think KCA has a minimum $40 order tho....Get you a matched set of EL84's while you're there for backups. WELL worth it in my book.
As far as brand....EH/JJ have done super good in mine.

I've never played through a Blue, I was commenting on the power rating of 15 watts and headroom, or lack thereof.

Blue = 15 watts rated. It can handle 20 easily.

On that PI you'll want a balanced one. Mention it in your comments section on the KCA order
