I'm finding out that my Z-28 (and 66) are way loud before satisfactory breakup for my purposes. Is anybody out there using really inefficient speakers with their Z-28 and getting good tone? I don't really want to use an attenuator.
I'm already using a Greenback which I think is rated at 98db, so it helps on the volume already. Anybody got any recommendations? Is anybody using Jensens with their Z-28? I looked at the specs on some of their speakers and some are as low as 94db...
Thanks for your help or suggestions.

Sounds like you need an attenuator. Not sure your going to find a speaker that is less efficient in a meaningful way below 98db.

I was going to say either Jensens or an Airbrake.

Weber AlnicoSig12s.
I don't know how much less volume if will have over the Greenback, but I know I have almost zero overhead and about 1/2 the volume

I think a Airbrake would do the trick. The Z 28 really puts the volume out. Buy one on ebay. if ya buy a speaker you don't like that's more time & money. I have a Z 28 2x10 combo which is GREAT. (I'll always have it) I've heard the Z 28 with greenbacks which I though sounded nice. I use a Jensen Blackbird with a Galaxie. I'll try that & let ya know in a day or 2.
Cheers, Richard

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.
I did have an Airbrake at one time and just didn't like the way it sounded. I'm not sure about going with a less efficient speaker is the right way either. I may just have to make a choice between the Z-28 and Route 66 clean sound and get an amp that breaks up the way I want at reasonable volume. I may have misjudged my volume requirements for the few gigs I play. I do like the way both these amps take pedals. There is more experimenting to do...

Dude your selling your "Lovepedal Eternity Burst $280.00" This pedal into you Z-28 isn't doing it for you for a low volume dirty sound?
I have the E6 and it's not the Z-28 cranked but it's a great F'ing sound and when it the Z-28 is cranked the E6 set propperly intantly sends me to a real Marshall tone. I have A/b with a couple great Marshall's. The owner of them was blown away.

I can get alot of usable break up at decent volumes with my LP, not so much with my strat. I also crank up the bass treble controls and come down on the volume and that works. most of the time I use a barber direct drive and that lets me get what I want at any volume.
great amp

Like I said there is more experimenting to do... I received the 66 in a recent trade and am currently enjoying the warm, rounded tone of this amp and it also take pedals very well like the Z-28. The Eternity sounds great actually and is more of an issue where I can get similar, perhaps not quite as good of tones out of some less pricey pedals I already have. I think I perhaps am looking for a different "flavored" amp for lack of a better term...maybe a Maz Jr?
I've tried cranking the tone controls and that is probably getting closer to what I'm looking for. Thanks!

I just recently sold my Z28 because of the volume issue but purchased an Rx Jr head in place of it and I'm very pleased with the results. I did try 12AX7s and a 16 ohm Greenback just to get earlier breakup - and it did work, but I don't play out in enough venues to get the Z28 to open up like it needed to. I also have a Maz 38 combo and the two amps (Rx Jr & Maz 38) are different but wonderful at lowering the volume as well as pedal friendly. Sonic Blessings, Steve

Scully -
That is some seriously nice stuff in your sig there. You got all your bases covered ampwise for sure. Big places with the Maz 38, small to medium with RXESJr, and recording with the Fuchs. That's, in theory, what I hope to do, eventually ;D

Thanks for the compliment. I just turned "double nickels" as my friends told me and I've been blessed with an understanding wife who knows my love for the guitar, and also tone, so I'm very fortunate in that sense. I laid the guitar down just out of High School but picked it back up in about '89. I've just in the last 5 years been able to gather the gear I have now and wouldn't change anything. I love the Dr Z amps, and the G&L guitars play great as well as the PRS's, and when purchased used you can't beat the price for the quality you're getting. I hope you get to continue your tonal search and find what compliments you best. Sonic Blessings, Steve

short answer, Scumback M75 (pre-Rola G12M clone). inefficient and sweet. But seriously, my 4x12 loaded with Heritage 20 watters is my go to when i really need to tame the volume. They are rated 96dB, sound great once broken in and in a 4x12 are remarkably quieter than my open back Z 1x12 with a G12H type speaker in it. plus, the z28 is amazing through a good 4x12.
