I used to play in a country/50's 60's rock band. I am now in a blues/classic rock band. I loved my Stang Ray 1x12 combo for the country stuff but not so much for the blues thing. I am wondering if a Maz Jr. may be better suited for my new band? I absolutely want to stay with Dr Z amps. Any amp that has held up that amount of road use and abuse is worthy of my undying support.

I think a maz would work. It has some Fender, Vox and Marshall flavors in there. You may also want to check out the RT 66. It has that early Marshall type sound which is great for classic rock. Or you could look at an SRZ 65 when they come back into production, or a Z 28 or a Mazerati GT... I suppose it all depends on what type of blues and rock you are playing. There are lots of options. Definitely a good choice to stick with the good Dr. Z! I'll let someone who is better qualified than me chime in...

Blues = Maz Jr. I'm the same as you - the Stingray works perfect for classic rock and country, but for blues it's just not quite right. But the Maz Jr or Maz Sr is just about perfect. Two words: Buddy Whittington. if you haven't heard his Maz on any of the John Mayall CD's, get one and have a listen to that git-tar!

The Ghia can dish out some pretty nice blues tones.

If your Stangray needs a little grit why not get a little grit box? You know: Baby/bathwater.

I always have to laugh when I see someone trying to get advice on choosing between two amps. We always just confuse them more! They come with two options, and they leave with eight. ;D

I remember at one point I was looking for someting new and honestly think I got a recommendation for everything but a 6545.

I use a Maz Jr and we play everything from Hank to Led Zepplin. I use quite a few pedals but the Maz Jr is really versatile.

Wow! Thanks for all the input. Much appreciated. I don't play very big clubs...small bars, etc. So I'm looking for something that won't be overpowering.

The Maz Jr/Sr NR models will absolutely pull off blues tones. I miss my Sr. But, it's real hard to beat a pair of 6V6's glowing in a Z-28. A Route 66 is a logical choice if your needing more clean headroom than the Z-28 can deliver, or if your playing large rooms/outdoors.

They come with two options, and they leave with eight. ;D yeah ;D Anyway though - the fastest, easiest and cheapest thing to try a grit box like oldster says. If you don't like that, then maybe look for a change of amp. A Stang Ray is an awfully nice piece of equipment though... Jan
