Can tubes make a Z amp sound harsh, fuzzy, buzzy, and muddy? My RXES is doing all of those when you get it up past 4 or 5.

YES! I remember when my power tubes went south on my Stingray. It still sounded like my Stingray, but harsh, not musical at all. I swapped the power tubes during break and HOLY COW - I couldn't believe how much better it sounded. I now carry a spare set to every gig.

OK...can the pre-amps and rectifier do that as well? What do you recommend for power tubes?

Rectifier either works or doesn't, and doesn't really influence the tone of the amp that way. Power tubes affect it immensely. I got some JJ's from Eurotubes once, bought some GT's at Guitar Center once, and ordered somewhere else online once. Oh, and once I bought some Mesa tubes 'cause I was in a bind - they were cheap, but they didn't sound as good.

EXCEPT their EL84 tubes which are not matched at all. This causes a lot of hum and lack of sustain if the match is too far off which it usually is.
