Okay, part 1: I have decided my 3 favorite tones are The Black Crowes (mostly Rich's), early ZZ, and the Allmans (Fillmore is my fav.) Which Z amp would cop each of these best and which would be best to get all three? Part 2: Have you guys ever heard of Back Door Slam? They are absolutely amazing! And that is my fourth fav. tone. If anyone has heard their stuff, which Z would do it best?

okay, i looked up the amps back door slam uses and they are Don Audio amps. Pretty impressive sounding I must say. Might give some Zs a run for their money. Except they are made by a small am builder on the Isle of Mann in England. No pricing either. But man they sound good. Maybe the best blues rock tone I've heard IMHO.

Yes, about a million times. Basically from his current models i am down to a maz jr., route 66, or rx jr. but the stangray has my interest as well because of the incredible love people who own them give it. Unfortunately there are no Z dealers in my area.

Some of the Back Door Slam stuff gets into pretty high gain territory. Maz GT?

Really? I thought the Maz GT was a high gain more along the lines of Van Halen? In other words, lots and lots of gain. I didn't think back door slam had that much distortion. I use a fulldrive and an OCD so I figured with a maz jr or like I could get their tone.

My vote would go for the Route 66.

How clean can the Rt. 66 go. Could it do justice to Gravity by John Mayer? That is the cleanest song we cover, followed by probably The Wind Crys Mary which I'm sure would be fine since Hendrix played Marshalls. We also play alot of funkier stuff that requires alot of clean in the Motown style of rythm like Superstition.

You've been trickling more and more info on your tonal needs with each post, and with each post the appropriate Z amp changes! If you are hoping to come close to your "3 favorite tones" you're going to most likely need an EL-34-based amp: Marshall or a very good Marshall clone (or a Harry Joyce, if you want Rich's tone). You won't get anywhere near with the Maz Jr or the StangRay unless you add a Plexi-like pedal, and then you still won't sound all that authentic if you're after their live tones. Route 66, Mazerati GT, SRZ65, 6545, or maybe the RxJr will get you roughly, but only roughly, in the neighborhood. But they won't do all that well on John Mayer stuff. I could see using the SRZ65 and turning your guitar's volume down a bit to clean it up for the "Wind Cries Mary" tone. Even then, I'd still suggest an EL34 amp: 50W Marshall, etc.

Yeah, I know. My favorite tones are in line with the Crowes stuff, and most of what we play is in the same ballpark tonewise. Really, the only really clean song is gravity and I want to be able to do it justice. We also do Free Ride which is on the cleaner side. The funkier stuff is important though because I also play in church where I do a lot of funky "clean with a little hair on it" rhythm. Most likely for me it will come down to a Maz Jr or a Route 66.

DC here!
I play my Route66 in my Rythm & Blues & Soul band: We play a couple of Power of Tower & James Brown funk stuff. Clean enough I'd say.
Cheers: Dixiechicken!
